the only important wires are the fuel solenoid, the stator, coils, starter, starter solenoid, and ground. the sensor on top of the block by the carb is not important ( I have never plugged my up at all and my 23 works great ). And you can actually remove the fuel solenoid completely and put a bolt in the carb to replace it,,,, or ground off a little bit of the fuel solenoid "Needle" (or remove the needle all together) and never wire up the fuel solenoid. I made my own harness for the kohler so my engine was a plug and play/quick disconnect ready. I got a 3-5 wire make-a-harness from Radio shack, both male and female connections for a couple of bucks.

DO NOT, PUT ANY POWER (+) TO THE COILS,,,, YOU WILL DESTROY THEM, SO BE VERY CAREFUL… EXPERIENCE IS A GREAT TEACHER, AND I HAVE LEARNED MY LESSON!!! LOL!!!!

Norm from what i see there, my best guess from what I see is red is fuel solenoid (keyed on/off), purple is to regulator plug(black box that's actually aluminum under ) you can see the purple wire in the plug in the pic/ hot at all times, and white to keyed ground for ignition cut off.

Check the original plug feeding engine, probably just the always hot and keyed ground, just add a keyed on/off to feed the solenoid and you should be riding.

My new beer holder spilled some on the trails - in it's hair and down it's throat.
        Joe Camel never does that.

That sounds correct and seems to go along with the info I have gathered.

OKAY, I had my electrician buddy come to the shop. He fixed all my wiring so everything works right now(he eliminated the kill switch so it shuts off with the key now). Engine cranked right up and sounds great, once I adjusted everything I tested the trans slowly. Everything works perfectly BUT I tried to open it up it wouldn't speed up or rev up, mabe 10 mph max. I'm guessing my belt is too tight? I made a 5/8" spacer plate for the engine so when it gets a bit cooler tonight I'll take it out and see what happens... At least everything seemed to work great.. Put the machine in neutral and rev the motor. Watch the clutches to make sure they are both engaging.

Yes clutches working great, clutch side of engine is pulling down hard when I rev it up, gonna take spacer out in a bit. Norm..

I took out 1/2" spacer and tried again, engine revs up nice and sounds wide open in neutral, took off and it feels like the 18hp briggs, mabe less power but a lot more than first time. So I went back in shop, put in neutral, revved wide open, engine clutch prefect, trans clutch 1/2 way down. I just cut and punched some new 1/4" spacer plates, I'll put those in and try again tom. It sounds good but really doesn't seem to have much power... Norm...

Well, I worked on the max4 all day and now that it's all properly adjusted I have to say that it feels like a new machine. It took a while to get the belt spacing and allignment correct. I installed a suspension seat (unbelievable difference). I also installed a tiny tach. I have it set at about 1000 rpm and throttle response is perfect but, it only revs to about 3650 max rpm and the plugs look really white(lean). Any suggestions? Shouldn't it be reving over 4000 rpm?Oh yea, Fred, I put the fuel pump on the other side of the engine so the cover will fit like you said.... The trucks left today to there new owner, I'm glad your son got to ride before they left he seemed to enjoy it..by the way, it looked like a race track around my shop the next morning. Hope he kept the neighbors up. Lol. Norm...

The gov. is adjustable, I've adjusted mine with the small bolt that pushes the throttle rod (7mm headed bolt with a stop nut). Adjust about 4200 unloaded and should wake it right up and pull like an Ox , you make have to slack the cable after adjustment so it will idle down.
