I think the field rep was smokin' something, its the same engine with a bigger bore and the heads are a little bit different. all the internal parts except the pistons are interchangeable with the 18 and 20's, I do not doubt someone had heating issues but its not from the design.
golf coarse equipment of all kinds run the 23hp in completely enclosed compartments. a lot of idling and low RPM's for hours at a time.

just going off of what I work on daily is all

interesting discussion . when looking up the actual vanguard 23 hp website, it says typical applications are golf and turf equipment, commercial mowers, power pack and generators. also says cooler, cleaner tech efficiency fan reduces engine and oil temps by 25 to 30 degrees. maybe the newer models are better ? guess a guy would just have to try one in their own model aatv and see the results. johnboy va.

John if you decide to try one fattening it up would be good, it should reduce engine temps at low/mid rpms. A new fresh air intake, if yours doesn't have one, will help also to pull cool air in instead of engine compartment temp. air. I remember Max having all kinds of issues with heat before the Kohler engines became available.

Still would like to hear Noel's issues and whether it was his Max II or his Argo.

My new beer holder spilled some on the trails - in it's hair and down it's throat.
        Joe Camel never does that.

Advice is free, it's the application that costs.

thanks jim and everyone. decided just to go with the 20 h.p. would have liked the kolher, but more than i can spend. main thing is i will be ready for april busco and should see a difference in power and performance from the old 16. i got 15 good years out of it. still runs pretty well and has a new $ 100 starter on it. anyone thinks it's worth buying let me know and i'll bring it with me. later, j.b.

It appears you live and work in Wisconsin, a place noticeably cooler than where I live and ride. There were several other machines plagued by the overheating issues I mentioned, Mightymax4, Mudbug (Dave Sanders) and others. When we rode, if the ambient temperature was 60 degrees or less, there wasn't such a problem, beyond that immediate and crippling problems. Every machine in question radiated so much heat that it felt the firewall was going to melt.

I mentioned that when a fuel pump melts down, you know you have extreme heat.

The common theme: each machine had a 23 HP B&S engine. Other machines with Kohlers, Generacs, and B&S 18hp engines did fine.
I will never own a B&S 23 HP engine again, in anything, like I pointed out previously, I've got several other B&S engines and they perform like they should.

Glad You found something that works for You, My climate has nothing to do with it. same equipment/engine's runs in all southern State's, My post was to address the comment of the field rep. 100% misinformation on His part.
The Bandolero engines run far hotter than the 23 and the Owner's of them on this forum seem happy with them

Again, I'm happy you found a answer to Your problem

[QUOTE=Nubs;194929]Boy its cold up here tonight

Just came back from my deer lease in E.Texas, it was a cold weekend for us with temperatures in the 20s. Not bad for staying in a travel trailer. I just watched a video about folks who are living in travel trailers in N. Dakota, now that looked cold.

To all my friends up North, hunker down and stay as warm as you can.
