  • Am I screwed with this motor?

One of the things I liked about my new Max2 was how clean the motor was and how easy it started. I didn't even look at the clutch in my hurry to get it loaded and out of there. It appears they rednecked (ground) the 1" shaft to a taper???!!! And I'm not really sure this is even a clutch. He said t came out of a max2, but then again he also said the tires held air (I knew they wouldnt). Any idea???

Doesn't look good. I dont think that is a clutch at all. Looks more like a driven sheave from some piece of equipment. As far as the engine you will probably have to swap out the crank. What make and hp is the engine?

I was afraid you'd say that. I'm thinking I can just sell this for a few hundred bucks, spend $500 on a 22hp Predator and throw a comet on it. Will my stock driven clutch be ok with a comet, or will I need a new driven too?

If its the driven that originally came on the max it will work just fine with the comet. Why not just buy a new crank for the vanguard and swap it out? Crank and gaskets would probably be a couple hundred bucks.

Try to remove the "clutch" so we can see what's going on there.

My new beer holder spilled some on the trails - in it's hair and down it's throat.

I agree with argojim still might be save able. Search this # on ebay 152328083902 its 1" for $65 or best offer with free shipping. Just try to confirm it will fit not sure if the vertical and horizontal used the same crank. Not sure which this crank is out of. I would swap the crank in the vanguard long before i would switch to a predator. Although some of these guys have had good luck with the predators.

He would have to spend $250ish for the crank, 75 for a gasket set and don't forget the piston rings if you can even them without the pistons. gotta push the pistons and rods out in order to slide the crank out.

                not worth it IMO

                just sayin'

That's what I was thinking Nubs. I live in Ag country, should be able to sell this to someone who doesn't need a clutch for a few hundred. You can get the predators for just over $500 shipped, and I'd have to buy a clutch anyway for it. I've never done any small engine work, and it's been a long time since I've worked on a car engine. I'm a little hesitant to tear into it. I'm having enough anxiety preparing myself for the chance that I have to rebuild the transmission.

if the previous owner did that to the crank, I wonder what other mechanical marvels he/she created on that machine!

What I had thought was, should the inner inch be unground perhaps using jbweld to build it back up to 1 inch and extending the key way.
This would all be out if the original crank was generator taper to start with.

The motor wasn't from my machine. I bought it because of how clean it was, (not a single gouge in the bottom plastic). It was dirty, but clean if that makes sense.
The guy I bought it from had recently purchased this motor from on the coast. He didn't come out and say it, but I gathered that he and his son wanted to build it and realized they couldn't afford to finish it, so they dumped it. Not too many out this way.

My buddy swears his gas golf cart has this, and that it some sort of centrifugal clutch. My fuel tank comes tomorrow. Gonna start her up and run it and see if That thing doesn't close under rpms.

Toyed with the thought of turning it down to 3/4" like a lathe, build a knife support and bolt it to my workbench. I haven't touched even a wood lathe since high school when I lost a friend in a woodshop accident, and I build custom furniture.
Didn't think about building it up.

Will probably buy a single cylinder Japanese clone and call it done. My wife is already going to kill me for being as far over budget as I know I'll be.

Good luck with the clone, that looks like a clutch I have ,somewhat. If the wife starts up just tell her i'm building it for you.
