  • Briggs RPM & tach Questions

All you folks that have a Briggs 18hp or similar motor, what RPM are you able to idle at without lurching the engine on the governor?

I just installed a Sendec tach on mine and I'm having problems getting a good reading. What ga. wire do you use and where do you mount it? The Sendec says you can use anything 22 ga. and above. I've got 16 ga and I'm not getting a good, consistent signal with 8 feet of wire. How do you get around the length limitations with the tach? I see that the Tiny Tach max length is only 6 feet.

    Thanks

The 16ga wire might bee too heavy. Sendec says use 22 gage or larger. I interprit that to mean 22 gage and "UP". (24,26,28, etc) That is actually a smaller diameter wire. 16ga wire is LARGER in diameter than 22ga. That might be your problem right there. It all works on an inductive theory. If your wire is too "thick" (big or heavy) the inductive ability is decreased. Try a MINIMUM of 22ga or (Higher number means smaller gage) "UP" gage wire and don't exceed wire lengths as set by the manufacturer. Make sure you wrap the pick up wire 4-6 times around the plug wire, AND that you wire-tie the loose end back to the pickup wire. I also use the Sendec and have it screwed (Adhesive don't really hold up to the heat) right to the flywheel cover just below the carb adjusting access hole. (Temps in that area do not exceed Sendec's specs. {125 degrees}) Haven't had any problems.
It's all just nuts and bolts.
