  • How long does a 18 HP Briggs&Stratten motor last?

How many hours does the B&S motor in an Argo last before it needs to be rebuilt or replaced. I'm looking at some nice Argo models from the 90's with 200-400 hours on them. I see others only a few years newer with 40-100 hours and the owners want lots more money.
    thanks, solbuilder (Bruce)

I'd say a properly maintained engine should be good for 1000-2000 hours, maybe more.

I'd be more concerned about chains and sprockets than the engine.

          1995 14hp

HI- Well i have a 1995 model max-2. It has 14hp briggs vanguard in it. I installed a oil cooler on it when briggs first started offering them. I also installed 3 small fans into the rear of my maxs body which was a great way of removing more hot air out of the inner body. Last time i had my briggs dealer look it over they said it was still like new. It has great compression.its not using oil and doesnt smoke. It's as we all say and that it is how well you maintain a motor is how long it will last. This little hard working motor has many long hours on it. I use my max in hunting hogs as well in search and rescue for missing children and adults. checkout the website and you will see pics of me using it to search for missing persons. Chains and sprockets

            Thanks for the ideas.
So a couple hundred hours is really no problem if maintained, got it.
I've already passed on the units with rusty chains, and will look at a couple this weekend in Minneapolis with snow tracks. I need the tracks to check the cattle (and have some fun) in the snow. thanks for the help. Bruce
