HELP old briggs 18hp twin cylinder problems

i just bought a hustler bigfoot 980 with an old briggs engine that I was told it was just rebuilt but it doesnt seem like it has alot of power and the air filter is getting covered in gas. its blowing out of the carb it seems when you rev it up I also need a pic of the governor linkage it seems to be rigged up the model number is 422437 1049 02 i cant figure out where the springs go or what type of springs its suppose to have THANKS for any help

Cant help you with the running problem, maybe i can help with a pic of the governor. Is it like this?

no this is an old briggs totally different governor setup thanks though

on your running problems, first check to make sure you have good spark in both cylinders and also replace the spark plugs even if they seem to be ok. if the problem persists, check all the bolts that hold the intake manifold to the engine, they tend to loosen up on that engine and can cause trouble. you might also tear down the carb and clean it. also check the float level and reset if needed. I'll try to scan the page of the manual with the linkage and post it for you tomorrow

thanks replaced both spark plugs and rebuilt carb yesterday and still same problem ill check manifold next. ive bought the springs the manual calls for but they didnt work for the governor either thanks if you could post linkage

here are some pictures from the manual, if these don't help I can pull the air cleaner off mine tomorrow and get some pics of the setup.

I really struggled to get mine to run right when I got it. bought a carb kit, rebuilt it, and it still ran terrible. finally figured out that the last person to "rebuild" the carb had put the wrong needle in the low speed (kit comes with 3 needles to fit several carbs... only 2 are needed). when I rebuilt the carb, I followed the previous owners mistake and it ran just as bad. once I figured that out and swapped the correct low speed needle into the carb it ran perfect. might be something to look into.

your third picture is my governor setup but the springs i bought dont put any tension on anything. if you could get me those pics it would be so helpful we had to make one of the links the long one because it not available to buy anymore. is the governor lever supposed to be pushed to the drivers side or passenger side when you tighten it down. also i need to know which spring holds tension on the throttle cable and where it hooks to.my carb is a fixed jet carb with one needle i think we just replaced one needle yesterday can that be correct.

it shouldn't be the fixed jet carb, unless the engine came from a generator, or some other application.

the springs don't really have any tension on them except when the engine is running, and the governor is doing it's thing

I won't be much help here but I'm very interested. I have the same model eng in my 980. I'm curious where you guys are getting your carb kits. I've tried a couple times and still don't have the right kit. You still running the factory carb mounted fuel pump?

if you took out a plug, to find the jet, and if they weren't located like they are in the middle picture i posted from the manual, then it may be a fixed jet carb???

the carb kit is Briggs Part # 694056. I saved the box as my local dealer had a lot of trouble finding the right one. 4 tries.... seems this carb was used on very few applications. my kit was around $30. any briggs dealer should be able to order it, but I doubt you'll find a shop that has it on the shelf

thanks thats the kit i got it was made for the 3 screw fuel pump but i went today and bought a whole new carb with 4 screw fuel pump havent put it on yet, but i still need the governor linkage pics off of your engine when you can thanks
