  • Carburetor Spitting Oil!!

Ok, well I bought this MAX during the winter, I drove it in the snow & it went fine.. eventually the performance degraded so i did a check of everything & eventually checked the air filter in the carb.. The reason the MAX was running crappy is that the filter was clogged with motor oil.. Hmmm i said & looked up some reasons.. I read that running the MAX with the choke fully on can do it, extreme cold can affect the oil viscosity, etc ect.. So i changed the oil & the air filter, oil is up to proper level (yes i screw the cap in to get proper reading).. I just took the MAX out again, I made sure i cleaned all the oil out with a rag before i went for a run.. Got back to find a coating of oil in the carb cover & some again on the air element.. Not enough to stall it but it def would if i ran the MAX for an extended period of time.. It eventually would clog the air filter.. So i cleaned the oil with a rag & throttled the motor up in neutral & watched to see what happened.. At full throttle i see specks of oil spurting up from the carburetor..
This is NOT good, the oil is fresh & new, it is warm tonight 45 degrees, ran with choke off, etc etc.. no reason that it should be doing that.. What the heck is going on with the engine?? anyone have something similar happen or any input?? Do i need motorwork?? bad rings?? - Any help would be great!!

It could be something with the crank case ventilation system. Here is an old post, maybe it will help you.

i had the same problem with my briggs motor in my max 2 it was the crank case vent flapper valve follow the vent tube down from the bottom of the air cleaner to the small cover on the block inside that cover is a small rubber type flapper it gets brittle with age it dosent seal properaly . replace it and make shure you dont over fill the crank case (i do alot of steep climing and found i have to keep the oil level at the bottom of the cross hatch on the dip stick or it will also puke out the vent)
they dont call me mad because im angry!!!!! im just a little crazy thats all!!!!

Thanks for the replys guys! -

LARRY: Hmm not a big white smoke problem going on, more of just a spattering of oil that i know is gonna ruin my day once im in the moddle of nowhere & the air filter gets nice & oiled up causing horrible performance..

MADMAX: That vent flapper.. is it hard to get to?? is it a big job??
How did you resolve the problem, where do you find a new flapper???
Any help would be great thanks!!

If it is definately coming out the carb... and not the crankcase vent.....I'm guessing you need a rebuild. Your next step is to check compression.

Sounds like the crankcase valve is stuck. That's the rubber hose that hooks to the carb, Undo the 2 5/16th screws that hold it to the motor.pull it out of the motor & shake it, if its not rattlin it not any good and replace it. Some times you can clean it out with some var-saw but its safer to replace it. I'd run a compress check on the motor, 120 psi to 85 psi is good. 120 being the better and should be close on both sides. when you pull the spark plug whats does it look like, is it covered with burnt oil? what oil are you using 10w30? you havent said what motor you are running ??

as stated above its most likely your cranckcase vent mine blows a little oil up there from time to time but it sound like yours is bad can almost guarntee its not oil coming out of the carb

Hey thanks for the replys guys, I got your PM texas ranger thanks!
Im gonna pull the spark plug later, I have the 16hp Vanguard motor.
It has to be something simple, i mean the motor runs strong with not sputtering or smoking, so it cannot be bad rings.. if it was rings i would be smoking like a banshee i would assume.. I am guessing that the motor has to be be good, hope its a simple fix..

The oil you see spitting out of the carb might just be some oil laying in the intake runner. On the compression stroke you will get a little puff back out the carb due to the compression release on the cam shaft. I agree with the above. check out the crank case vent first. I've also seen on some mower engines where a sheared flywheel key will cause it to puke a lot of oil. somehow when it gets off time the crankcase pressure must jump up. I don't have a real good explination for it, but it's something I've seen on several grass cutters

Ok update, i took the carb cover off & dug a little deeper into the issue... It seems the carb spits gas when you throttle up fast & hard, like a little spray.. I think the oil might be coming from that little black rubber tobe.. Becuase when i removed the carburetor cover assembly.. The metal tube on top of the engine where the rubber tube goes into, oil oozes from there when under throttle.. Is any oil supposed to come out of that metal tube (see pix) - Is this normal or is it a problem?

that would be the breather everyone is talking about. I would first replace that assembly. if that doesn't fix it, then we can look for other possible causes. they are usually pretty cheap from any briggs dealer

Ok hopefully i found the issue!, im guessing i can just remove that nut & the assembely will come off? - Also is this a common problem on these engines? If so, that will be a relief as it is a likely easy fix..

                            Sumpcommander,
Yeppp, they go out sometimes and if you ever dump it on it side will do the same thing.just make sure you clean it up real good around it be for you pull it out and remove all the gasket be for you put in the new one. Install the new one and a air filter and you should be good to go.I need to tell you Sorry , I just realized I told you ( 2 ) 5/16th screws that hold it in. I was thinking about a horz motor not a vert.I had just done one the day be for .
