  • Choosing an engine..

sup guys, need some input....browsing the "future Power plants" for the attex.. Ive got a few questions for everyone..

1st, Whats minimum size yinz suggest?
2nd, Does it gotta be pressure lube, or is splash lube gonna be just fine as long as i run a little extra oil? i got alot of hills round here, figure ill be goin up n down them..lol
3rd, So say i buy a small engine that doesn't have fuel pump on it...and i wanna use my existing fuel pump that came standard in the attex..how the heck do i plumb that into the new motor if it aint gotta nipple for it??... (haha..i said nipple..)

i do realize i need to buy a clutch as well, and ill get one once i figure out what motor to get..lol as for clutch, i got my eye on a couple different ones..but thats after i get motorized!

Lookin forward to reading yinz's input...i know all yall will be able to help me decide..(cuz i kno the ole lady aint making it ANY easier..lol)

Thinkin bout a few different ones...if they'll work...

    This one..
15 HP 420 cc Horizontal Shaft Engine for Cement Mixers, Roofing Elevators, Paint Sprayers, Aerators, or Other Equipment-LF190FAQ at The Home Depot
Ive read lifans are decent motors on some other forums that arent "aatv" related..

    and/or this one...
DUROMAX 16 HP GAS ENGINE GO CART MOTOR LOG SPLITTER | eBay
As for these motors..ive read even MORE good stuff, i guess their clone motors, and they make alot of diffrent stuff.. Governor can be easily removed if needed, and valve springs can be replaced with heavy duty springs for more rpms, and power.. From what i read, they're a kickbutt motor that good longevity, and hold up to ignorant situations..

I can chime in on the fuel pump as I run a clone in a golf cart. I messed with two options.

      1. Buy a little intake that goes just before the carb that has a pulse fitting. Run a line from that pulse fitting to fuel pump.

      2. Remove governor completely and tap the remaining hole in case for vacuum line fitting. Again run a line from new fitting to fuel pump.

I did option two and my little clone has 62hrs of ungoverned run time.

Yep, I'm a golf cart forum guy. My little clone has done very well for me. I try to talk all big like I run the snot out of it but really we mostly cruise the gravel roads around our house and trail ride some. I don't have any real performance mods like you mentioned. I've been looking at cams forever but just can't pull the trigger. It'd be so easy to drop one in. Heck, I had my cam out when I pulled the governor. Only issue I had was a little carb jetting trouble. I bought a few jets from a high end boat place (guess they use these for generators) and got things lined out. Mine is the 420cc 16hp.

Question guys...will the stock 440 gearing be ok with a smaller, less powered 4 stroke? as in chain N sprocket ratio?..just curious..i was thinkin bout that today, and uhh...made me wander..lol

You should be ok. Gearing is a preference so if it works for you its all good. You can always regear if you want to, but try it and see is the best answer I can give you.

well, had me a 22hp robin/subaru on order through my company at a NICE discount..welll...they didnt have none at the warehouse anymore, AND didnt know when they'd order more..so i got screwed on that..BUT...i DID just pickup a 16hp vanguard vtwin for 300 bucks. Its used..and guy said it doesnt have any problems, BUT we will see.. model numbers a 303447... so tell me what you can about the motor. Also, i figure a rebuild kit can be had for it eventually if it needs it, but for 300 bucks, i think i did ok. we will see...its all there except the muffler..so ill need me some flanges for making a custom muffler. Anyone know where to get some cheap? Let me know guys, Thanks! ....maybe i should call clarke?...HA!

Check the gocart sites for cheap flanges, i saw them on at least one of them, but couldn't tell you which one. I found out that a spacer is needed for the clutch to line up. It appears that ri puts them on their stock engines too. Sorry to hear about your 22 falling through. The 16 is a common engine in a max II and i even see them in the IV. I believe member george has one in his attex little truck, and even after sinking at busco in the spring it still gets around pretty good.
