20 hp kohler command wont turn over

Ok guys here is my problem finally after a year got my argo together turned the key and saw smoke from the front of the engine (the starter side) anyone got a clue on where to begine. Here is what I know the batter is fully charged and working fine, when I turn the key nothing no click no nothing. Everything is wired correct my thought is the wire I spliced in for the hour meter that was lose hit the block and shoted somthing out. The fuse is also not blown

I am not sure what you mean buy go into the engine at all. this might help the engine had 30 min on it when I got it, It was a test enging for MDT so except for pulling the starter I have done nothing to it.

just asking because if you went into the engine or rebuilt the engine or what have you, and you torqued down the connecting rods too tight on the crankshaft, the engine won't rotate over, thus making your starter smoke or burn up,,,,,, just clicking or no clicking at all!!

I assume this is a motor transplant. Commands are not original equipment. If you used a key from a 2 stroke Argo It will not work on a 4 stroke install. in fact you may need a ignition switch from a Vanguard or Bigfoot to make it work.

Not knowing the engine or machine history I wonder if there is a fusible link in the wiring at some point. Typical place would be from the hot side of the solenoid in the wire going to your key switch. Check the wire(s) for continuity. When they go out, sometimes it is not readily apparent to the eye because it looks like regular wire. Something opened up the circuit maybe a short causing too many amps to be drawn and the smoke you saw was coming from a fusible link wire that is there to protect the rest of the wire harness?

Ok no new updates but a I have some important facts I left out I put the wirering harnes together myself their is only one fuse i it, which is good. the engine ran strong up till my little issue. Day off tomorow so I am going to see what I can figure out.

I pulled the starter works fine checked the harnes with the the meter and no shorts at all I am stumped

Don't this motor have a stater solenoid?

it should be built into the starter.

If the starter is good it sounds like a wiring issue.I would take the wires off the starter and jump the starter with jumper cables to make sure the starter turns the motor over.If it turns the motor over then it has to be the wring or maybe the key switch.

Jumped the starter the other day seems to work fine. is their a senser that could be causing all of this mess .

Ok got an update hopefully someone can help when I hook battery directly to the solenoid the engine will fire up. If I turn the key the selenoid will click but thats about it, just charged the batter if I hold the key on the fuse blows anyone got a clue?

It sounds like the key switch is wired up wrong or bad key switch.Did you wire the key switch up.
