  • MaxTrax: 25" Rawhide IIIs in Adair Tracks on Max IV

Well, it all came together for my Max IV this weekend. Here is a link to the thread that gives the basic idea for the body support and what I did that allows this combination to work on a Max IV.
    http://www.6x6world.com/forums/max-a...big-frame.html

I have tons of pictures and videos. Before I get to that I figure since it is an AATV I will start off the thread with a video of the first place I went with the Adair MaxTrax III.

MaxTrax III, that's what I decided to call my Max IV modification to install the 25x12x9 Rawhide III tires AND Adair 18.5" wide tracks. After comparing my tracks to the other Max's at Adair Argo it just sort of made sense.

Here are some pictures of MaxTrax III compared to Tim's Max IV with 22" argo tires and Adair tracks.

Here is what makes the MaxTrax III possible, the Support Bar. It lifts the body for the clearance needed. No heating required. Also works awesome as a grab bar. Sort of hard to imagine the Max without it.

A Max IV with a lifted body will take tires as big as the axle spacing allows but to become the MaxTrax III I needed the help of Tim and his crew at Adair Argo Sales in Adair, Iowa.

They had an open bay waiting for me when I arrived so we could fit the tracks. Made me feel sort of important but Tim seems to treat all his customers as friends.

When Tim gave the OK that tracks would clear track construction began.

Grousers need these spacers to keep them in place

    The first track is complete.

Once the tracks are built they are rolled out for mounting and fitting.

Then wrap the tires with the tracks and start looking at the clearance you have.

Jason shows the amount of track now exposed.

The first track is mounted, but the edge is a little too close for Tim. I was planning on running the factory 3" spacers but it looked like we needed an inch more for safety. Tim had the ability to make 4" spacers so we removed mine and installed the 4" set then mounted both tracks.

Once the tracks are fit and checked for body clearance the they need to be fitted for proper tension and the master link or half link is installed. Everyone helped out to make sure it was just right.

Videos of testing my MaxTrax IV.

Tim testing with just a bit too much track speed. You can see the tires throw water up and out of the tracks.

Tim gets a little crazy as he checks out the stability of the MaxTrax III in the water.

A little more water testing with Jason. Tried counter rotation. Works great as long as you don't give it too much throttle.

Jason and I check out how the MaxTrax III handles two people. And yes it does back up in the water.

Out of the water and ready to make a shake down run on the hill.

Finally we loaded the MaxTrax III in the trailer and hit the Creek to rid it of Beaver dams.

Up the Creek without a paddle is no problem with Adair tracks.

Leaving the Creek-mission accomplished. You can see the creek is about a foot higher already.

Now you know why I built the MaxTrax III. The same reason guys do most things I guess. To chase Beaver.

Wow Keith! That is a very impressive machine. I can't wait to see that MaxIV in some of the swamps and marsh in you area! I am impressed with the inovative way you created tire and track clearance. I have always thought the MaxIV would be the ultimate if you could just get a little more track and ground clearance. You seemed to have resolved all those issues and it looks like you are going to have the ultimate MaxIV. Congradulations on the design and improvements.I look forward to seeing many videos of that machine running through impossible swamps and mud conditions in your area.

Keith: I have to agree with Dan, that's a deluxe Max4 for sure. The Recreative factory system gets the additional width, and your vehicle hanging technique got you the height in the wheel wells. Those wide Adair tracks really do a fine job from there filling in the track area.
I know you have a similar plan for that Hustler 980 and I can't wait to see how that turns out.
MightyMax4 I'm looking forward to seeing your machine when done as well.

Thanks guys, I really cannot take all the credit for the system to lift the body. Being a member of this forum and being able to go back through all the old threads and pull together ideas is a huge help. Also getting info and help from other members gets a person going in the right direction. I could not be happier with the result. I spent an hour last night just riding around the house. Through the woods, over rocks, up and down the banks of the dried up marsh and over fallen trees, and of course testing on the steep grades of Jason's dirt track. The Max is an animal yet drives perfectly controlled. It handles all the obsticals with ease. I have a few more tweaks in mind but the major work of getting the bigger tires tracked and fit is finished. I am planning on heading to the Badlands ride with it Sept. 14-15. I will take it tracked but if there is no water will pull the tracks and mount up the AquaTorques or maybe the 28" Duro Buffalos on the 12" Beadlock wheels I plan to make, but that will be a different thread. For now I am just hoping for a wet fall and snow this winter.

Hope all my pictures help people understand how my mods were done, and again thanks to Tim and the staff at Adair Argo Sales for taking the time to fit my machine with tracks.

Here are a few mor pictures of the MaxTrax III as I like to call it, Keith.

Wow, that machine is a Beast, I love it.
You've done a great job customizing it to your needs.

OK, now the question no one seems to wanna ask... how much did that track/spacer package end up costing you??? (As a MaxIV owner, I am curious as to how much moolah I need to save up in order to attempt something similar.) Thanks.

Well, it is a factory tracked Max IV that I paid 4500.00 used. To get new wheels, tires, spaces and tracks will cost about the same.
