The Briggs vanguard did not exist in 1983. It would have been a Tecumseh OH-180. If you are speaking of a retrofit, you are looking for a primary clutch for a 1" straight shaft, approx 7 1/4" diameter, for a 1 3/16" wide belt. Used ones are very hard to find, and Comet went out of business so an O.E. is next to impossible to find. Another company bought out comets tooling and is now making clutches again, so here is as close to O.E. as you will find 302405A-W2 - 780 Series Drive Clutch for Recreatives Ind Max ATVs | ATV Parts | MFG Supply Recreatives is now using powerbloc clutches CVTech-IBC - - Nos produits

        Maybe it's a 1993? What's your serial #, #7127? 1987?

Always go by what R.I tells you, after all, they made the machine. Is it a Briggs v-twin, flat twin, or single cylinder?

Horizontally opposed to be exactly correct, what SHOULD be in it if it was an 18hp???

The Briggs flat twin I/C line of engines were never available in the Max. Hustler and Bush Swampers came with these from the factory, but Max AATVs never had them. Someone must have swapped it in, and yes, it's a tight fit. I believe Brian (racerone3) swapped one into one of his Max II's at one time.

If it was a 1983, Jim is right, a Tecumseh OH series single cylinder would have been in it from the factory if it was a 4 stroke machine. If it's a 1993 then it would be a 18HP Briggs V-twin Vanguard. The guy that sold it to you gave you some incorrect information.

I will take pics later this week. Maybe that's why they said the body was cut up before they put the piece of crap northern tool 13hp honda clone in there!!! Is this a good engine? How much for a rebuild we want to get it rebuilt and put it back in.

The Briggs flat twins are torquey engines, I ran mine in my Hustler 980 BIGFOOT for a little while before I swapped it for the 23HP Vanguard. In all honesty, I think it'd be cheaper and easier to just get a used, low hour 18HP Vanguard in the long run.
