  • Greg's T-20 mess

I finally got the trans out of the hustler today-

there was a bad bearing that let one piece gall a gear, one drum that has light surface umperfections, and the bends had a 'hot spot' in one place, and are going to get relined...

im afraid that one piece ain't gonna buff out- see pictures..

Where is the best place to get the bearings, seals, and that one piece I will need??

You can see corrosion, plus the wobbity bearing wiped out that bushing.. Does somebody offer just the bushing?

You can buy the bushings from Recreatives. Getting somebody who can put it in might be tricky.

Any reason I can't cut the old one out and press a new one in myself?

Well, I've never tried. A friend did it for me. I did ask the folks at RI. They were willing to sell the part but I guess that part of the process is out-sourced. I think I asked Brandon (Max Rules) but had no luck there.

I'm not good with fine maching (or rough for that matter) and I was afraid I'd make things worse doing it myself. It may not be that big of a job for somebody with more experience than me.

I'm not afraid to mess things up!

I was just going to cut the old bush out with a dremel, then heat the drum, freeze the bush, and press her in.

In other news- I didn't keep track of what band goes where.. How do you sort them out?

I've always tried to keep the bands with their tranny halves. Mixing up the inner and outter bands in not a problem, they won't line up with the anchor points. From what I understand, mixing up the bands (right vs. left) is easier to do and could cause a problem. Apparently it has someting to do with the direction of the drum rotation and the glue on the band material.

Maybe these links to the site will help.

You don't need to use the dremmel. The bushing is thin brass and will collapse if pried in at one spot. The problem will be when the new bushing is pressed in it makes the inner diameter smaller. It will need to be machined back to proper clearance.

Each case side has bands that spiral in opposite directions...it should be obvious where they go when you get ready to put it together.

The one close up picture you posted is the shift collar. There are used ones floating around and they're not nearly as expensive as a drum, so try putting a wanted ad here on the site. All the other parts you need, like George and Jim said, can be purchased directly from Recreatives. Amphibious Six-Wheel Drive All-Terrain Vehicles: MaxATVs - Call 1-800-255-2511

                    Done.

I don't think I would have ever done anything with this machine if it weren't for this group. Thank you guys for the support.

                      Hey Greg,
When you get the new bushings your probably going to need the bushing machined and I can probably clean up your shift collar also. Just let me know when you get your bushings. My brother and I just had to do this to his.

                        SWEET.

The spec is .003 or so from what the gentleman at recreatives tells me. I ordered the seal kit, bearing and bushing today.

I got my trans bands coming back from transmission crafters... Now all I have to do is get back home! ..and try to figure out how to put this thing back together... I'll have to look at the how-to's again...
