  • The project to create a homemade T20

Hi I want to make a homemade T20 gearbox similar but more powerful. For engine 60 HP.
Able to transmit torque 950 nm.
Please give me the link above where you can see a long T20 device.
I saw some photos of the T20 and I think that's possible.

Planetary gear I found from a truck. We are the only option. Housing and shaft are homemade.

People have put way more than 60hp to a t-20 before...

There are 3 things I would change though.
    1) A t-20 only holds a quart of fluid, a larger reservoir would be nice.
    2) The input shaft is fairly small, and may be the weak link with higher HP
    3) It would be nice to have synchronizers for shifting.

You may also want to reline the bands with a higher friction material for the higher HP motor, so it takes a little less band pressure to operate.

the simplest way to make a skid stear is to use the trans axle from a car. YOu can adapt one from a light duty car. here is an amazing step by step build from another forum member.

I already did that. BUT differential is not all wheel drive.

But then you can't skid steer it by stopping one side or the other.

If you use an are locker for driving straight and disengage it when you need to turn it could work, but that seems like it could get confusing while driving. Straight through mud lock, unlock turn right, lock through the puddle, unlock left, and on and on and on.
l like to buy stuff and no I don't do payments!

Do lockers fail open or closed? Cause if it's the latter that could be dangerous!

Hmmm? I would think that they fail open as they are typically installed on street legal trucks for off road use. Also, its my understanding that air pressure is what locks the dif solid. If that is the case, it would have to fail open. Wouldn't it?

Agreed.. I imagine we'd hear more stories of accidents caused by "I couldn't turn" (thinking about the vehicles with lockers from factory).

yer it was just an idea thought it may work but as use said it could get complicated but because it runs on air you could use switches on your steering so that when your levers or steering wheel is in its center position difflock is engaged but as you start to turn the wheel or move the lever difflock disengages stil sounds complicated but atleast your not turning it on and of manualy

Forget diff lockers. My 1967 Chevy truck has a locker, and when I get hard on that hot 327, it'll almost skid itself straight. My Jeeps past and current that have them make turning on snow more difficult when they engage. I'd think the last thing you'd want is an unpredictable diff locker popping in on a 6x6 setup. It'd be a death ride.

What about a good tight POSI or even better a Detroit True Trac helical gear posi/locker they are very smooth and provide consistent power heck our ranger has one in the front and when in 4wd butter smooth on pavement/ice both sides working as they should...awesome diff!

Then again a T20 when SKID steering isn't true all wheel drive just when going forward, so a E Locker or Air Locker may be a good thing, open for casual driving and locked for hardcore stuff. Have a micro switch that works when skid steering to unlock it and continue on...

                              Just thinking out loud.

Or study the PATENT of the Hagen/Rooter transmission and build a counter rotational transmission like that...I'm told they can take 100HP no problem...but have only a 2:1 gear reduction. Uses clutch packs similar to a Posi for engaging gears.

Or go full hydrostatic or hydraulic...

                              more out loud thoughts
