Thank you for the video and the drawing. I think I'll go for the flat bars and get some heim joints to take out as much slack as I can.
All I can say is I'd better enjoy driving this thing when I'm done for all of the time and expense I'm sinking into it. I don't want to be one of those guys on Craigslist asking way too much money for something I never use just because I spent more than I should have and can't stand to take the loss.

After Whipper's answer I googled for the gear shaper and its quite and interesting machine. I have seen shapers in action but never knew about this specialized type. I also found the video of gear cutting porn from Whipper's shop that you have on your Vimeo and that was fun to watch. If I hadn't stumbled into doing computer stuff for a living I'd want to work in a machine shop. Instead I just make expensive bad parts and chips in my garage at home.
