  • 6x6 clutch and belt problem need help

    I have a super swamp fox that i just replace the briggs engine
    with a 1000 cc geo metro fuel injected unit
    it runs and drives well but keeps flipping the belt
    the engine is about 5"s farther back
    belt is much longer than original
    engine clutch fly,s open very fast compaired to trans clutch
    any advice would be helpful

    Engine to clutch distance shouldn't be a big problem. The Kubota in my SSF sits back at least that much further from the transmission than originally intended. The fact that the drive clutch is "opening" much faster than the secondary might mean that there's way too much slack in the belt. Is it tight? Do you have about an inch or so of deflection when you press on the top-middle of the belt, or much more than that? How is the alignment on the clutches? What clutch are you running?

      Belt alignment good and tension is ok. Trying to figure out how to slow the engine clutch down to match the trans clutch

        I'd say just use the stock drive and driven clutches and keep the idle of the engine under 1000 RPMs and you'd be good.

          ...but what drive clutch are you running on the Geo now?

            My guess is your running a snow mobile clutch? Or some other one? Check both the primary and secondary clutch springs. Physically pull them apart and make sure they are not broke. You have the full attention of someone who has successfully set up Polaris clutches on a geo metro in an Argo.....

              You can't slow the drive clutch down to match. The drive clutch controls the driven clutch. As the engine rpm rises the primary clutch closes, this forces the trans clutch open. When rpm falls, the primary opens back up and the secondary close in sync. If your secondary is lagging, it may be having problems....bad sliders, weak spring or sticky bushing.

              The root of the problem is cvt clutch systems are torque sensitive, and when you increase the HP by a great amount, they will want to up shift too quickly......There's just not enough to hold them back.
              First, make sure you don't have a problem with your secondary, then you can try to adjust your shifting in the primary.

                First, make sure you don't have a problem with your secondary, then you can try to adjust your shifting in the primary.
                Was the original machine a two stoke by chance? If so the cvt system will be tuned for 3000 rpm engagement and like 7000 to 9000 rpm full shift out. It truly sounds like maybe you have a snow machine clutch on the Argo? If you do I have the weights and spring setup combination that you need (for Polaris any way) and I can find part numbers... If your primary is shifting out too fast, it is because the secondary spring is too light OR AND I MEAN OR the primary weights are too heavy OR AND I MEAN OR the primary spring is too light. How ever, as bad as you have described here, I believe that there is a broken spring in the primary or secondary, or the secondary spring has slipped. It is possible to reassemble one of those secondary clutches and not "clock" the spring properly. The clocking of the spring on the secondary sets the pretension. With the machine off can you reach in there and pull the bottom of the cvt belt up? It should take some for e to do this. If it seems really easy to "burry" the belt in the secondary I would say it is highly suspect. Good luck!
