play on the input shaft, T-20

Hy,

How much play (radial) should the Input shaft have? (maximum)

If i press the secondary clutch up/down and to the left/right, i can see that the shaft which goes trough the output shaft has some play. Even the outputshaft moves a Little bit.

Is that normal on a T-20?

As far as I know the U-channel T-20s do have a bit of play in the input shaft, due to them being unsupported by a bearing like the output is. I don't know how little/much play is considered acceptable though, hopefully someone else can shed some light on that.

But if your unit is a popsicle stick version I don't think you should be having this issue at all, since the input shaft does have proper support on those.

Dont know which version of t-20 i have, but ist from the early 80s.
I had it apart and put new bearings and sealings in it.
don´t know if it had play before the service and short after the service. But now (after 20hrs driving) i recognized that it has some play. Maybe 05mm which is 0,020 ".

You can tell by the shape of the sticks on the front of the unit, here's what the two versions look like: http://www.6x6world.com/forums/trans...tml#post196026 If yours is from the 80s it should be the U-channel version (2nd picture) since those were the later models.

5mm of play doesn't seem terrible to me, but again I have nothing to compare that to, so we'll have to see what someone else has to say.

One of my T-20's has probably about that for end play but its because someone before me broke the tabs off the center plate washers and they are started to wear into the center plate.

End play can be as much as .030" before I worry much. Up and down with new bearings you need a dial indicator to measure movement. If the teeth in the ring gear are worn the inboard end can move enough to see at the clutch. New ring gear teeth with good planet gears have almost no side to side movement. If it functions properly I would run it and check for changes. It's probably ok.

Ok. So I see that I don´t have to worry much about that.
My Transmission is the U-channel version.
