  • Salsbury 910 Clutch Alternatives?

I am looking at relocating the engine on Jennifer's Max IV and was hoping one of you clutch experts could tell me if there is an alternative to the Salsbury drive clutch on the motor that would do what I wanted. I need it to still close the same way (from the outside of the clutch inwards towards the motor) but I need either a more narrow clutch (overall) or one that allows the belt to ride on the outside of the clutch (away from the motor).

I need to move the belt as close to the tub as I can but the spring (dome) assembly on the salsbury is restricting how close I can move it. Basically the same problem as Whipper had when he relocated the engine/tranny in his Max IV springer but before I remold the lower tub I was wanting to see if there was a clutch out there that would prevent me from having to do so.

After speaking with Don I realized that I could reverse the clutch on the motor and get it to do what I want to do however I will have to also reverse the clutch on the T20 and that will not be possible without relocating sprockets, tensioners, etc. which I don't want to do.

If you know of a clutch that will work or that is just more narrow let me know.

    Thanks,

    Mike

you could put a Polaris snowmobile clutch on the trans and gain about 2 inches.

When you reverse the drive pulley you need to use a speed sensitive driven end not a torque sensitive (ramp type) converter.

I would just mold remold the tub. It was really pretty easy to do. It only took about 20 min to build the screw jig to keep pressure on the die. You don't have to have a steel die, just use the clutch itself. Just push it 1/2" farther than you need. Remold it with the engine mount forward, then pull it back and remould it again. If you look at the pic I posted of the jig, it's just a piece of 3/4 all thread inside of a piece of tubing with a nut welded to it.

I know it's tough to take the heat gun to the 'ol girl (the Max, not Jennifer.... ), but I'm with Whipper on this one. It's really a piece of cake to do, and if you take your time, you can make it look just about "factory". The Comet 94c Duster for 4-strokes has a bit of a slimmer dome, but I'm a big fan of the original big clutches. Do you plan on just lowering the engine and moving the trans forward a'la Godzilla style?

The T20 will remain in the stock location with the engine mid mounted in the car. This is going to be a one seater for Jennifer even if the engine remained in the stock location simply because I moved the seat back about a foot to get some leg room. That in itself eliminated the back seat so I thought, why not move the engine down lower while I'm in there.

I will probably end up just remolding the tub but the problem that may cause me is where the clutch will be sitting; it will be very close to hitting the back of the middle tire. Since I'm not a springer my tires are really close to the tub and I may not have enough room to remold.

I just thought I would see if there was any other options out there for now.

I've got the seat mounted and I am close to having the engine mount fabbed up. Then I can really tell where the clutch will be. I will post some pictures soon.

          Thanks for your help.

Sounds like this is going to be an awesome machine!!! Have you thought about installing spacers to give you more clearance behind the tires?

I have but I was planning on using the Vampire ASX's which will really negate the spacers effect. They are so wide that it's like not even having the spacers when it comes to the distance between the tire and the tub. I still may go with another tire and use the spacers though. That's not out of the question.

              Thanks.

Mike this is the offset when comparing clutches. The belt will move about 2" back twords the center of the car.

                  Marc,

Thanks for taking the time to take that picture and for the suggestions. I was hopeful that this clutch would do what I needed until I looked back in the tub of the Max IV tonight. If I use the Polaris clutch I think it will hit the chain and sprocket. I only have about an inch of play there. I will remeasure tomorrow to double check. That would be ideal if that clutch would work. It would keep me from having to remold the tub and also let me center the engine a little more.

                  Thanks again.
