  • T20 shifting problem (no reverse & creeps forward)

    hi there
i have a 2004 maxIV and have come up with a problem that i cant seem to solve with the T20, shifting problem ,no reverse & creeps forward even while in neutral ,to stop the creep i have to pull back on the sticks about 2 " but the reverse thing is unknown , if i pull and hold the reverse shifter REALLY hard it seems to try to engage but soon as i give some throttle it grinds like its not engaging fully ,it seems like an adjustment problem ,so i unhooked the shifting rods (both L&R) and tried to push the forks further back but they dont seem to want to go back any further , ive never had a t20 apart so i'm not sure what the internal functions are ,is it possible the shifter forks are bent inside ?? or am i looking in the wrong direction ??

    t- 20

how many hours do you have on it/first i would check fluid level/ has the sticks ever been adjusted forward or back/is there any fluid in the tub leaking out of the t-20 / what does your fluid look like /check all these things first /i rebuilt mine i am not a pro these tranny are tough //// another i forgot maybe your diamond shifters on top of your tranny are not engaging all the way mine was worn produced a grinding metalic sound mine had a flat spot inside the tranny shifter// sometimes these t-20 can be a biotch to shift from forward to reverse GOOD LUCK

I'd suggest taking pictures of the plungers (with the sticks in the neutral position) and the diamond shifters (also in the neutral position) and posting them here so we can see how they're adjusted and make some recommendations.

It sounds to me like you're sticks are over adjusted in the forward direction. We might be able to tell by seeing the plungers.

The creep and the no reverse may be two seperate problems.

Pull out both of the shift levers from the top of the trans and check the shift pins. If one is sheared off, one side will be stuck in forward, or whatever gear it was in when it broke.

It sounds like at least one side is stuck in forward.

The creep could be high idle speed, clutch problem, or wrong belt / belt tension.

          hope this helps

yes , i pulled the motor and mount and set it aside ,pulled out the left shifter rod and it came out nicely but the pin is worn flat ,( i would assume it is supose to be round ) went to pull out the right side and it will only come out 1/6 th inch i'm betting that the pin has blown out the side of the shaft it it is set into ,it will not come out without damaging the o-ring seal surface ,it will have to come out inward or else a new case half will be needed , hmmmmmm what to do LOL
              ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,thanks guys

Did you try some lube a small pry bar or claw hammer. Sometimes you have to work one side of the diamond shifter then the other side to get it loose. You should also use a thin piece of wood under whatever you use to pry with so as not to damage the case

                  well fellas'
all your advice and help did the trick, i've added pics so you can see what happened and maybe it will help others along the way ,,,,i'm glad i did not pry the shifter fork outwards because as i guessed the pin had blown out the side AND there was a lge burr on the bottom of the shifter rod ,i did have to pry off the diamond shaped lever so that it would slide into the inside of the gear houseing after removing the drive sprocket (someone said somewhere here to use 2 screwdrivers to remove the snap ring that holds the drive sprocket in place ,was the snapring supose to come off before or after one of the screwdrivers slipped and went through the flesh of my palm , LOL),,,,,,,,,note to self ,,,get the proper tool ?!?!?!
as for the reverse thing it appears as though the reverse gears were not meshing or wern't being engaged fully and have worn down nearly 50 %
so anyways all is dealt with but now i need a trani ,,anyone know how much factory rebuilds are and wether or not mine could be still used as a core ?????

Ok I have ran into another issue/concern with my thunderchief. My problem is some what similar but different. My T-20 shifts into forward fine but when you put it into reverse it take some work to get it to grab. I did discover one thing, one of my diamond shifters is very tight and doesn't wiggle, the other one wiggles and I did notice that is the one that doesn't fully engage in reverse. So my questions are should the diamond gears touch the case when the trans is put into reverse like it does when its in forward and should there be some wiggle in the diamond shifter. Here are some pics, you will see in the pics the difference in the gap that is the wiggle and I adjusted the shifter linkage so that it would push the diamond shifter all the way to the angle that the starter relay is mounted on wish also concerns me because that is keeping the shifter from touching the trans case like the other side. Thanks for all the help.
