  • Uh OH!! anybody have to Heli-coil the t-20 mounting bolt bosses???

I went out riding on New Years day and once or twice I felt this wierd feeling from the Tranny. Also It wouldn't spin the right side in reverse when I got stuck (twice!) So I pulled the Motor and T20. Both bottom back 3/8 mounting bolts were broke off in the case and the adjustment appears WAY off. I don't know if it happened this weekend or if it has been that way since I got it 3weeks ago. So I spent a lot of time drilling out the bolts and trying to "easy-out" it. The "easy out" broke off... NO FUN!) So as it stands now I have a T20 sitting on the workbench that either needs bottom tapped or heli-coiled.
What do you guys think? I am thinking heli-coil because I'm afraid the boss may break and Heli-coil doesn't require such a tight interference fit.

Also to clarify the adjustment... set the space between the case and the u-channel top and bottom on each side to the same measurment, then look for 5/16ths of movement of each of 4 plungers... right? The more I read the less confident I get. Thanks in advance!

It sounds like you know what you are doing with the heli-coil.......

I couldn't find the post I was looking for where whipper outlines how to put a pivot bolt on your "u channels" , but this post does show it too http://www.6x6world.com/forums/trans...html#post73766
It's a great mod, right up there with split shift for usefulness. It makes adjustment soooo much easier too.

I have heli-coiled a few holes in the T-20 before. If your confident you can get them located accurately enough then go for it. Personally, I think they should come from the factory with them.

Yeah, heli-coil is my friend. I break a LOT of stuff! I read about the shoulder bolt mod but it appears that that will have to wait untill I have to tear down the T20 so I can get it spot-faced and drilled at 4.5 degrees... I'ld like to get a feel for how robust the bosses are where the work would take place anyhow. Also gonna reinforce the mounts like I see on the forum. That sucker has a lot of torque going on for just the two bottom bolts and the "kickers". Might as well fire up the Mig!

        Thanks!

Heli-coil worked! I adjusted the tranny and it feels great. Also went and got another Belt-the other one was too long. this one is a 1/16th wider (1 1/4") and 43.133 inches long with 28 degree sides. It's the shortest Polaris snowmobile belt they had and it works great with 3/8" spacers (stock). Also $54.00 compared to $72.50 from REC.

I've been searching hard for that shoulder bolt mod link. I think this is it. Page 29.
