  • Hows my transmission look? lots o pics!

Well its been awhile since i've been on here but finally got around to tearing my dads t-20 apart on his 03 max iv. why tear it apart u ask...it wouldn't turn left (like zoolander) so, i tore it apart and this is what i have

so...is all that gunk normal in there?? honestly it looked like anti-seize

is that little spring thingy normal in the seal?\

this is what it looked like right when i removed the halves.

here is left side outer band

here is left side inner band....ouch!!

here is right side bands...looks like a crack in one...is that bad?

right side drums...def have wear marks in them...do i need to replace them?

left side drums...and yes thats like an 1/8" wear mark!

so guys...honestly i don't know what to do...is it cheaper to rebuild this or buy a rebuilt one or any other options?? and the two outer bearings are really rough sounding so they probably need replaced too. thanks and i really appreciate all your help!

That's pretty nasty inside but most likely, what you are seeing is where the band material disintegrated and mixed with the ATF. You can get the bands relined relatively cheaply (search here in the transmission forum to find out more) but I don't know of a cheap source for the drums. You can try posting a wanted ad here in the classified section of the site for the drums and see if anyone has some they are willing to sell or you can just call the factory to price them new. The two outer bearings are expensive and they can only be purchased through the factory because they are machined down to a smaller size: Amphibious Six-Wheel Drive All-Terrain Vehicles: MaxATVs - Call 1-800-255-2511. The only other thing you would want to get would be a rebuild kit that includes all of the seals. I think it's around $45 and you can also get it from the factory. I would start by trying to source the parts and see how much it is going to cost you to rebuild everything. Then compare that to a used T20 that you find either here on the site or ebay, craigslist, etc.

    Good luck.

Whipper, turned down my forward drums; the reverse drums were to far gone to work with. If you get them from the factory. they're $250.00 per drum.
