Put new engine in my 1979 Argo its a 21 hp Kohler, my problem is the only spot I was able to get it to fit my clutches do not line up. Is it possible to shim my primary clutch, and if so how much can I get away with out causing damage?

Moving it 1/4" should be Ok. The clutch slides in on the shaft untill the key hits the ramp in the keyway. A machine shop could make you a custom shaped key that would ramp sooner. Or if you were good with a welder and grinder.....
Just make sure you have lots of crankshaft to support the clutch. I'm guessing you will have at least 2"?
