The question of HP is not as relevant as how much torque the transmission sees. Input vs output. Some the 2 stroke racing machines are seeing over 80 hp,but their torque throughput is less than a Max4 pulling tracks. Probably the best solution is to lower the gearing to the axles and upping the engine speed.
Also the newer t-20 design may not take as much torque as the older units due to the shorter input shaft that does not have the far end supported. The newer input shaft CVT diameter has also been reduced from the old 2-stroke clutches which also reduces the starting torque on the trans. Obviously a 4 stroke engine can take advantage of a smaller driven CVT.

I would agree that the input shaft is most likely the weak link.
I wonder if Whipper could make a stronger one????

The dyno results on the Crush was 45.7 ftlbs torque at 7700RPM at the wheel, this was done on a chassis dyno with a centrifugal type clutch not a cvt. Now by the time it gets through all the clutches and the belt...who knows. The pinto engine must have that or more because she comes off the line hard but only a dyno would tell and Shana is still running the same T-20. Haven't heard of any problems.

Mark"s Blackbird when i drove it will actually make the wheels hop off the ground. A lot of torque to make a machine do that. By the way that machine flies but on the ground.
Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways , cigar in one hand, whiskey in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO-HOO, what a ride!!!"
