  • Clutch questions

Ok...I got the clutch off the 440...man what a job....now my next delema is the clutch from the original Kohler 2 stroke does not fit the output shaft of my Kawasaki engine without hitting the engine case...the Kawasaki has a 30mm tapered output shaft but it's short, does the Kohler have the same 30mm shaft size, or do I need to get a different primary? Maybe a shaft extention? (please no wise cracks...lol) I have pics I can post if need be...

By the way it is a Salsbury clutch...I don't know if they make an adapter or something to retro fit it on my sled engine....

I figured I'd put that in for "good measure"....ok I'm done now...lol...anyway...is the shaft on a Kolher a different pitch, or a different size all together? I'm stuck with a clutch that don't fit....can anybody point me in the direction I need to go from here?? (beside buying a clutch for $300 bucks)

all the vintage sleds I have worked on the cat kawasaki is the same crank stub as the kohler. some polaris had a 30mm long shaft. the clutches should interchange. what is the model of the kohler engine?

I assuming the original was a 295cc, I'm not sure of the model of it....I'm getting the info from the guy who had it before me....he said it was a 2 stroke but was locked up...he swapped in a 10 horse briggs and tapered the Briggs shaft to fit the clutch (which came off the 2 stroke engine that was locked up), so you get an idea of what I'm dealing with.....I wonder if he also modded the clutch to make it fit...

So what was wrong with the clutch from the Kaw?

it was too wide for the 7/8 belt I need to fit the secondary....the thing would be screaming before it engages....plus when I popped it off using the "trans fluid and bolt trick", it came off with such force that it hit my vise on my bench and broke one of the towers off and chunked the sheath on the rear...scared the crap out of me when it came unglued....lol

A 30mm tapered clutch for a 1 3/16" belt, should be easy enough to find at a snowmobile salvage yard. Locally they cost about $35....a couple years ago anyway.
You might even get lucky and be able to use the secondary off one of those sleds you bought. Trust me, it will be easier to ditch the jack shaft setup.

I'm starting to think that....I wasn't looking to pull the chassis out and rework it but It's starting to look like it's heading that direction....I was hoping just to put this thing together to have fun with...If I'm gonna dump a bunch of work into something I'd like it to be a Max, Attex or an Argo...although if I build it with the 440 engine and center the trans I'd probably have the baddest Seirra Trail Boss on the planet...lol

Putting the trans in the center may give a little better balance, but at 70 lbs, it wont make that big of a difference. Your 440 kaw motor probably doesnt weigh that much either......and what are we talking, 6" to center it???? Not a big deal. Driver seat position means much more than that.

The Kaw is around 60lbs....I never weighed it to get the actual weight...yea its about 6 inches to center...the original drive train had an extention shaft on it too, with the transmissions being on either side and the clutch setup running in the middle...having two molded in bucket seats, unless I cut them out, I'm kinda stuck with one side or the other...I'm afraid that removing the seats will weaken the structure of the top half of the body....I'll get this figured out...just gonna take me some time and a lot of stupid questions and research...I've got the basics....now I have to put them together and make them play nice...lol

Ok...I got the other Salsbury clutch off the parts engine...here are the pics...

the clutch on the right is the one I just pulled off and is a bigger unit than the one I was going to use...

Here is a shot of the inside....

It says Salsbury Torque Converter on the fixed sheath....can anyone ID the model? Is it rebuildable?

A manual for your Salsbury variable speed torque converter that details the different clutches along with assembly procedures.

                            this manual may help

Great manual....I also found a thread on rebuilding them...it looks like a Salsbury 910, I got it apart and eveything is in good shape....just dirty, although the rollers are rusted....I got them freed up but 2 are still pretty stiff....do they make replacements for them?
