  • Problems with t-20 rebuild

Hello Gents, I have an issue. I just replaced my early model T-20 with a newer model T-20 because the holes that hold the diamond shifters were not in spec, making it hard to shift between gears.

I swapped the trannys and i put everything back together almost with ease until I noticed the my newer T-20 planetary gear plate (the plate with the 3 holes in it that holds the gears in place) had a small crack in it so i replaced it with the older one. No harm no foul I suggest. I may have put it in wrong (wrong side up, but i didn't think that it would matter, or does it?)

Then my bands, that was all layed out according to how i took them out went back in great except for the right side. I had to switch the plunger on the top band to get the bands in ( bottom band plunger up going one direction and top band plunger down going in the other direction).

Both halves meshed together well and I threw the tranny back into my Hustler. Now here comes the problem.

-with the shifter in reverse, pulling back on the laterals, the driverside goes forward and the passenger side does nothing
-withe the shifter still in reverse, pushing forward on the laterals, the driverside does nothing(brakes) and the the passenger side goes back.

I think that the problem could be resolved if I flipped the drums and flip the planetary gear plate! What are your suggestions?

It sounds like you have the bands on the one side around the opposite drum. I've heard of that happening. I don't see how the bands would line up with the wrong drum but apparently they do, as you are not the first one to do this. If you drive the vehicle like that it will destroy the bands and drums in a short time. Take it back apart and make sure the bands are wrapped around the correct drum.
Everybody dies, but not everybody lives.

It sounds that way to me, too. Don't use it or you may end up buying drums & bands, Fred! I had one come to me that somebody put together themselves and it was acting like yours, but they tried to run it that way. 'never really figured out why- it couldn't have been fun or easy to use. We needed to replace two drums and two bands because of it.

      Good Luck!

I dont understand how the bands could get reversed, unless the sleeve was left out. Then the 2 eyelets could be in the center of the anchor pin.

With the band in your hands, welded eye facing you. If the band winds to your left it goes in the input shaft side(left). If it winds to the right, it goes in the right side. I had a t20 apart that had all left bands in it. The owner said it just wouldnt steer,I didn't drive it before repairs. Hope all turns out well

Ive fixed the my tranny problem. The bottom band was not seated all the way around the drum, and I had one of the plungers on the wrong end of the bands. She brakes and accelerates great now, especially after Cbass too a look at it and did a few adjustments.
