Sorry to see that, going to cost, might be best to go with the new g trans. and get the ratio you want.sigpic
My new beer holder spilled some on the trails - in it's hair and down it's throat.
Joe Camel never does that.
Advice is free, it's the application that costs.

There are a couple MU's on ebay in cali, broken /unchecked so pot luck with what you get, may be minor or may be what you have now. The common issues with all of that style is either broken diff gears or hi/low and input shaft gears.
I would guess yours were broke for a while and after second diff. gear let loose it jammed and took out the cage, vibration and heat will loosen the 3 bolts holding the cage together. From what your pics show I'd suspect the helical gears are done also.sigpic

I'm not much of a gambler. I would rather get something I can be sure of. It is tempting to try and save some money. I did manage to find a factory rebuilt one for a lot less than $2400. Waiting on replies from a few others to see if they can get it any cheaper. They dealer says I have to hurry because the factory is about to have a summer shut down. So I want to make up my mind by Wednesday of this coming week. I want my machine back on the trails.

If you haven't already, pull the engine/powerpack frame and clean and paint any thing that needs it. You may find that wrench you or the previous owner lost too, you may be surprised at how much trash is under there then again maybe none.sigpic
