  • need help.. more troubles

have conquest with the 20 hp kawi and this afternoon after running it with the new governor spring(decided to buy new and not use fabed one) it seemed to bog out after a bit.. ran great for about 15 mins and then all of a sudden just bogged. if i stop and let it sit for maybe 5 seconds it will run alright again for a little then bog again.. engine does seem to be awfully hot and carb was just taken apart and cleaned up nice. couple questions.
should my temp be running up high and then quickly dropping back down, or should it stay consistent temp? is there a safety system on say a 98-99 conquest that would shut it down if overheated? could it maybe be that my float is not allowing enough fuel to keep up with the engine? you guys know a hell of alot more about these machines than i do so any help is appreciated. P.S this machine is slowly getting on my nerves! how much movement(coolant)should you see in the rad when running?

it sounds like your tank is not breathing and it's creating a vaccume witch starvs the motor. is the tank vented ?

it is vented but im not too sure it is working.. any way of telling if shes working? what about running it with no tank cap and see if that will help??

I think the vent is in the rear of the machine and I also heard of another guy that was having about the same problem and his vent was plugged. If you loosened your cap and it runs fine then your vent is more than likely plugged.

right on.. il have to give that a try this morning. the symptoms do resemble a vaccum where the fuel pump will not pick up any fuel. any other ideas are welcome.

okay so today i went for about 15 km run and took the vent out. still doing the same thing. it was running good for bout half the ride then started doing this. when it bogs down it runs real rough like its missing and sometimes when i bring it to a stop it dies.. ANY IDEAS??? could it maybe be the fuel pump??

Are your gas lines in good shape? I once had a snowmobile do the same thing, the gas line would collapse and it would starve for gas until i stopped and let the carb refill.Hang in there it's probably something simple.Good luck!

fuel filter under the seat, on top of the tank?

i changed the fuel filter before heading out here today to see if that would help. but no luck.. im almost thinking of doing a test on the pump tomorow to see if thats my problem. maybe take the tank off again and clean it out. maybe theres something in there that the fuel pick up line is dragging off the bottom.

I was told by the Argo dealer in Colorado to move my fuel filter up closer to the engine. The fuel lines start breaking down on the inside and pieces will then flow into your carb with the filter over the tank and you will never know. If the filter is closer to the engine it will catch the pieces and you will see it time to change your fuel line.

I have a simular problem with my Conquest and I have not been able to figure it out. Mine seems to loose some power and start running rich at operating temp. I have adjusted the valves, new plugs, new fuel line, new air filters and good compression(140-145psi per cylinder) also removed spark arresstor. Do these engines have a spark advance? Also my temp stays steady and never has overheated.

Any help or ideas would be nice. If nothing I will be taking it to a shop that works on tha Kawasaki engines. We don't have a Argo dealer in Fairbanks, Alaska so I will take it to a small engine repair shop thats a authorized Kawasaki repair shop. They will only work on the engine but thats fine. I will post the outcome when I find out.

NAPA sells a fuel pump that will work on it and its alot cheaper than a pump from the dealer.

The one at NAPA is only like $50. Just make sure it doesn't have to much pressure because the argo pump is a low pressure pump.

Any problems with overheating before the carb work? Have you checked to be sure the fuel lines are clear? If yes to the first and all clear to the second then check your temp regulator/thermostat, overheating can cause such probs you're describing. Did you change the position of the fuel lines? It could also be vapor-locking if your lines are getting too hot.

If all this checks OK then as much as you prolly won't like hearing this and since you are seeming to have trouble with the overheating thing it sounds like the symptoms a blown head gasket will cause. Hope not. Dont freak yet though; Kawis are known to be very finicky engines. One of my brothers had a Mule that he even went so far as putting a complete new carb on. Did it work? Hell no! He sold the thing just not to have to mess with it anymore!

I had a similar problem and replacing all of my fule lines solved it ,the ones near the engine had small cracks in the vac and fuel lines, the would open up once I started driving and lose suction.......from the heat.....
