Help figuring out what I bought

That's a bummer, the guy I bought it from thought it was an 81. The dealer tells me that argo doesn't supply parts for anything more than 10 years old.
I can have a shop make the axles, but what about the sprockets and things like that?
The axles have the three lug plates on them, not 4 or 5. So I assume that is even more proof that it's a 70's machine?

The cheapest way to new axles is to have a machine shop make some. I would recommend that you get them keyed rather than splined, you can simply put a standard key and order an approparate key stock, and weld sprockets as need be (if it is double 50 chain two singe 50 sprockets welded is all argo did)...... Or you can go completly nuts like me. Call your rig a sevinty something. min is an eighty something Good luck!

It has single sprockets, but they are on sleeves, the axle slides into them and a pin holds it. I would need a couple of those as well, not sure if a shop can make them.

Argogirb67 had some new axles and sprockets for sale but shipping from Canada can get expensive.

On those 70's models the number plate your looking for is actually on the firewall, biggest upgrade you should do is the 5 bolt wheel adapters so you can run the modern rims

I just got back from an argo dealer here in Michigan, he had one axle for it, that's all....
Turns out we think it is a 1974, far from the 1981 the seller said it was.
I really need to find some people with parts to sell, I called richards relics and he has absolutely nothing for it.
I guess I will start a new thread with an appropriate title to look for parts.

Take that 1 new axle to a couple of local machine shops and ask around about having some made.Once you get comfortable with the fact that these things are not exactly spaceships,you will begin to realize that parts are very easy to make and replace,heck,if your like me,you'll see that certain items can actually be made different ways also.Stick with it. These are also parts that are good to be familiar with on your machine,it will make your 6 wheeling experience more pleasurable.

Ask your friend if any of his co-workers are Tool & Die makers.These would be the guys to meet and befriend,they will know just what you need.I'm assuming the axles are just straight shafts with the sprockets and wheel adaptors "pinned" on.The "pins" are just grade 8 bolts.the axle mat'l is just steel in the "Turned,Ground and Polished" condition (TG&P).Various grades of steel can be used,do a search on the forum on that topic.Here is a link to the 3 to 5 lug "adaptor plates" published on this site.(Home page,under "manuals")http://www.6x6world.com/images/broch...plate-dims.pdf The tube that the sprocket and wheel flanges are welded to is just 1" I.D. If your going to get custom axles made, make sure you run 72 mm bearings on the outboard and get the sprockets and axels "keyed" meaning since their getting fabricated have key ways cut in them. It will save on heart ache later. If you have to pick two axels to get that done to, do the front two. Stepping up to 1 1/4 stock would also be a good idea, you can still get over the counter argo flanges that fit the 1 1/4 holes. Good luck

So using a bigger bearing doesn't affect the OD just the ID? Meaning they will still fit in the frame?
