FOD in the Argo

Forgot to mention: I found the same type of hose far aft, inboard, under the lip, held in by a clip. No idea the function of this. Wonder if it's something added by a previous owner. The unidentified tube-FOD could definitely be a piece of this contraption instead of a missing piece in the motor.

could these peices be part of the gas tank venting and the port through the tub, if it was clipped in? I have a 2001 and the hose is still flexible but discolored as opposed to clear.h

I agree with trev. could be a gas tank breather as for chains degreese power wash and relube as for tire try letting air out and straighten best you can with a piece of wood and a hammer

Awesome - thanks for the replies trev and kez - I'll be home from work in about 5 or 6 hours and plan to take her back to the lake. I will do an inspection on the fuel tank, this makes sense. Appreciate yall!

Last 2 pics:
Gas tank breather line, and I still think the "Tube" is the spacer that goes under the Throttle linkage. Like I said, it may have been dropped, then replaced with a new one. I've dropped and lost a couple of those in my machines (I actually carry a spare one with me now)

I'm still giddy over this thing. Went on a 4 hour ride last night with a buddy and another buddy with his wife and 3 year old son. I'm learning the best mix of feathering/gassing to provide a smooth ride for the youngins and ladies. I love this machine! Wish I could find some fellow 6x6/8x8'ers around here! (Reidsville, NC)

This picture on this rock do zero justice, it took several nail biting maneuvers and I'm nervous to inspect my skid plate afterwards! This rock is for you Rock.



This is the first day I brought it home, if I were a magician I'd crop that hideous Wildcat shirt out of my Argo photo.



And my storm Argo, looking like a military vehicle.





I promise I am going to devote some time to maintenance and inspection soon. Will take pictures and share the experience with you guys. I just can't seem to stop playing long enough to do some work.

My family and friends love to explore on this thing.

Nice looking conquest. I'd suggest visiting Argo Parts & Sales | Amphibious Vehicles | Centaur Parts | ArgoParts.com and save a desktop copy of the Owner's and Parts Manual for your machine.

If you are not sure of the age of the fluids, I would drain and refill the engine (SAE 30) and transmission (80W90 Gear lube) for starters.

Check the outer bearings by raising the conquest off the ground and seeing if you can move each tire up and down. If you can add grease and try it again. If you still have allot of play, time to replace the bearing. Outer bearing is a UC206-20 and can be found at just about any bearing supply house or from other venders. I prefer Buffalo Bearings 1-800-669-8019. Talk to them and they will set you up. Ask for the R3 version, that means triple lip sealed.

Check the chain tensioners to make sure the chain is tight. Not sure how it is with the older style tensioners. Get a good chain lube and keep them suckers lubed.

It's getting close to time for you to start thinking about upgrades. Tires, or Tracks, Pushbar, Rear Rack maybe. If that's not for you, just disregard me, I sometimes think the machines look incomplete without a Pushbar on the front (Have to build one for my daughters Conquest, but have had no time lately)

So, when is the next Argo Adventure?

Upgrades! YES! That's all me and my buddies talk about!



In order of importance, these are my upgrades:


- Upgraded comfortable seating for the back, I love to take friends and family. I would like wider seats (at the expense of leg room, that's ok) and even seat-backs behind the rear benches. If anyone here has done this mod, point me in the direction of those pictures? I'd like to see how it's been done!

- Push bar! (I am a trail blazing, woods wrecking machine... this would get a lot of use)

- Lights, lights, lights. We love night riding and I wanna overdo lighting capabilities.

- More storage! I am badly in need of more storage than just the little compartments under the driver's seat.

- Drivers cup holder? Ideally one that secures the beverage from jumping out!

- Either a driver's seat belt or some sort of raised "arm" to keep me from sliding?

- Aggressive, knobby tires... Or tracks? I assume I could buy the outboard and tires for the price of tracks. We only see snow once or twice a year here so I'd benefit from tracks that swim, mud, and climb well. I've read about the Adair tracks and they sound like a fit for me but I am leaning more heavily toward knobby tires and outboard as my budget alternative. What are your opinions?

- 5-7.5HP outboard motor (If I choose swimming tracks I may scrap this)




Of course I am just dreaming! I need to do maintenance on the machine before I do anything. I can't hardly stop playing long enough to do anything.

I appreciate the advice on the bearing inspection Dan. It helps to have walk-through instruction like you provided, I'm a novice on machine maintenance. Sure enough, they seem loose. Didn't have time to grease this morning before work but I certainly will as time allows! Also, thanks for the link to the parts manual! This helps a ton.

I've greased all of the inboard fittings, changed the oil, added transmission fluid, changed plugs and lubed all my chains. Still, the idler chains are loose, confirmed by a neighbor that works on heavy farm equipment. Adjustment to those chains is probably one of the first things I need to work on.



After some maintenance I plan on winning the lottery to pay for my upgrades.

PS: I just thought this was funny. I sell Toyota's while I'm not out rednecking and check out where one salesman parked this Camry. LOL - Wish I had the Argo with me to pull him out!




PPS: Next Argo adventure takes place in about 4 hours! Just found out the wife is pregnant with our first and we have a doctors appointment shortly, then it's off to the woods with my mini-tank!

First off congrats on the baby, oh and the one coming in 9 months or so. Storage upgrades is one of my big quests. I like to be ready for any breakdown out there. I went with a voodoo tactical rifle bag hung from the front seat rest. 42" or 46" fits perfect. Can carry all sorts of things other than guns and can attach many more smaller pouches. I also made a cloth set up that lays over the trays under the bench seat and down in front of the gas tank, behind my calfs. Again same set up as the rifle bag with many attachments for pouches and such. If you look online for military surplus there are all sorts of bags available. I bought 3 dutch poncho bags that are water proof and 14" long that i hung from the bar the front backrest is screwed to. I filled these with rain gear and a shade cover and a storage cover, gives a little back support as they sit between the front seat back rest and the bench seat. I also got two Swiss ammo pouches again water proof and hung the from the back seat rails on the outside. They sit and cover the argo bigfoot decals. I also mounted 4 Swedish ammo pouches right behind the bench seat in the back area. There are all kinds of surplus bags in all sizes very cheap. another good idea someone had was to take a bucket buddy tool storage system and mount that, found at all hardware stores. I have to get pictures up one of these days. The nice thing about the green argos is all the military stuff matches.

Push Bar is on my list too. I have used mine like a D9 blazing around a large downed tree last ride. One upgrade I got was the rear bench seat, gives my daughters a better seating and they can use the drivers backrest bar to hang on to. I did get the bigger 24" Argo AT-189 Frontier Tires. Makes it a completely different machine, allot more capable.
