  • Well on autocad it works out to about 8.5 inches max. So in reality I will get about 6.5 to 7 inches maybe. I was glad to read about the spring rates you chose, over many years of playing with jeeps offroad I got into the workinngs of shocks, but never had to choose custom spring rates. There were so many manufacturers that had the kit for what you were going to do.
This gets a little more involved, you know vehicle weight vs.comfort for an old guys butt, oh wait that was controlled suspension movement.
I considered the formed arms, but didn't have access to a press brake.
At work I have 2 cnc lathes, and 4 cnc machining centers, at home i have an old cnc bridgeport retrofit, and my lathe,so I guess I made my choice for practicallity, I just didn't have a consistant way of bending several peices.

      • Hell for all the work and math and stuff going into these springer things, I'm just going to add about 4 more inches of padding to my seat and pretend I'm driving a springer !!!

Given the opportunity I would like a springer Hustler 980 Bigfoot.
I think there is a place for non springer 6 wheelers. It would be an interesting comparison to see how well the springer holds up in the brush and rock crawling.

          • Well when I get mine back together maybe we can take them out somewhere you guys aren't that far away from Ohio.
It would be interesting to compare rides, and have a good time.

I'd imagine really well. Look at any extreme rock crawling jeep, lots of suspension travel in those things.

              • Whipper, may I ask a few questions?

I tried to read threw all the post so it would be asked twice so I am sorry if this has been answered.

Did you need to reinforce behind the shock tower or what that metal plate enough strength?

What gauge of metal was used on the body and was it mild or hardened steel?

Did you find a big increase in traction or is it the same without springs?

Do you loose power, acceleration or get torque twist on take off?

Have you taken it in the water, does it float higher?
Why do we waste tax money on bridges and roads when we can all just drive AATVs

                  • Whipper ,

That was some great video footage with your new camera . I hope to buy the same camera set up you have , in 2008 . You ought to post this video on Route 6x6

                    • Look everyone, Whipper's tires are doing "The Wave"

Awesome Whip. It really does look like a smooth ride thanks to those arms absorbing all the ruts.

I really hope you and Bridget make it to the event in Ohio. I'd love to see both rigs in action...of course, you and Bridget would need to slow down quite a bit so we could catch a glimpse.

                      • That is really cool! I love how all of the tires stay planted on the ground all the time. I can't imagine what it would be like without the springer kit going that fast over that terrain.

                            • Super Chief Springer

Hey Whipper when you come up with a ball park $ on the kit please let me know (PM me). I would love to have my Super Chief be a springer. From your videos it looks like it works so well. I think it would be a big advantage here in the Northeast. More comfortable ride at faster speeds. Are the 1 1/4" axles necessary? Did you decide to move up to the 1 1/4" to use the splined sprockets?

I was curious if you had her in the water?
