I took it out last weekend and already broke it. I dont have any manuals for it so i not sure what the correct names for each part. So the sprocket coming off the transmission on the drivers side was locked on the rod. I figured out that the rod was not designed to spin and sheard off the cotter pins. This lead to the rod supports to get worn and eventually break. I'm pretty sure it can be fixed. I got the "spockets" off the rod and was wondering what should i use as a bearing? I have a new rod and fixed the supports already.
sounds like your talking about the jackshaft??? has 2 sprockets... one with the chain from the trans, and another with the chain to the middle axle? if that sounds right, you just need a couple brass bushings from your local bearing house. 1" OD X 3/4" ID X 1" long. just make sure you grease the jackshaft as part of your regular maintenance. sounds like yours might have been run dry. you might want to pull the other side and change them as well. the same bushing is used on the inner end of the axle. those have no grease fittings and wear pretty quick. when your replacing axle bushings, it's a good idea to drill and tap a 1/4-28 hole throught the axle and bushing and add a grease fitting to them

    • Thank you for your advise. Yes it is the jackshaft. I am going to go ahead and do both sides. Do you have any other advise or upgrades you would recomend. It seems to be very slow and would stall when going up a hill.

read through the Buyers Guide http://www.6x6world.com/forums/gener...ers-guide.html
that should give you some pretty good ideas of things to look for. I hate to give bad news, but it sounds like your machine might have been a bit neglected. I'd replace all the fuel line and the filter first thing. the ethanol in todays fuel eats older fuel line and can cause some major issues. after you do the lines, get a can of seafoam (any auto parts store) Sea Foam | Motor Treatment and dump it in a full tank of gas. it is great for cleaning gum/ varnish out of the carb. for your machine being slow... check the belt. it could be worn (too thin) or stretched. the clutches are what determine speed and torque on these machines, and if the belt connecting them is worn out, they can't do their job. if you get have any specific questions, try the search... a ton has been discussed on here and you can probably find what your looking for. if not post a new thread in the right section (IE: engine, trany...) someone on here should be able to guide you.

        • Thank you. I wish i had read the buyers guide before hand. O'well i probably would have bought it anyways. The previous owner said the engine was new and he replaced the fuel pump. I was suspicious of the fuel filter, but the lines were new. I'm sure i will run into more problems. I was just to excited to ride and didnt take the time to do a proper inspection. I'm enjoying reading all of the forums and they seem very help full. Thanks again.

          • Msmall, If your axles are hollow you can add a grease zerk at the wheel plate to make greaseing the inner bushing easy. Also, some jackshafts didn't have zerks. If yours doesn't it would be wise to add them

            • Hello...
I am new to this site and thought I'd join as I recently purchased adn early 1970's ARGO.
It is old an will need a bit of work to be done to it to make it entirely reliable.
At this time it is getting the old chaparral 432 swapped out for a late 80's Rotax 503cc aircooled twin.
What do you think of that? I'm told that it is a reliable engine.
The body of the argo has a few cracks and such so I was planning on trying to plastic weld the cracks.
I have ordered a airless iron from the internet and am waiting for it to arrive. probably another 2 weeks or so from the USA.
So... I will be looking for information on what sort of plastic the OLD argo bodies were manufactured from and ways of repairing cracks.
Also, chain tensioners are missing or worn out, so I will need to replace those along with some re-upholstry on the seats.
I look forward to searching out information from this site... "Northshore"

              • Hi Northshore, welcome to the site. Good luck with your Argo restoration. The 503 Rotax should give you plenty of speed.

                  • Welcome to the site! That 23 will be a great engine for the Max II. Try heating your rubber headlight grommet with a hair dryer, then gradually work your way around it pushing it in. Good luck with it.

                            • i have always had and worked on dirtbikes, snowmobiles, 3 and 4 wheelers...etc ...i even had a honda odyssey 250..i love bringing something back from the dead...i just recently purchased a 1975 action age gotcha 4x4...i know its not a 6x6 but it is an amphibious atv...it needs a complete restoration from the ground up...i started by pulling the engine and working on that...i redid most of the gaskets...cleaned her up and painted her...she runs and she looks like a brand new used one..the guy i got it from was surprised..he told me it had not run since 92.....i looked over the drive gears and it seems like everything is there but, one of the large sprockets teeth are really worn...just wondering if anyone has ever had that problem and what u did to fix it...does anyone have any diagrams or pics of repair manuals for these...or even pics of the gears and chains would work i think...anyway...i live in maine and even though i havent been able to ride this action age yet...i love it...i would love to talk to anyone who could give this rookie some pointers...thanks....
