  • Hello everyone.

    My name is Jim Matei.
My father was Nick Matei whom had designed and built the Priaire Bob-Cat. The manufacturing name was; NIC-MAT Industries Ltd. located in Edmonton, Alberta.
From 1960 through until he sold the business in mid 2000, I had traveled throughout Alberta, BC and the Yukon into some of the most remote fishing and hunting area's.

Having grown up building the Prairie Bob-Cat as a child and later became a distributor until 1984.
There is no doubt that these machines were High Maintenance, but having grown up with the development of the Prairie Bob-Cat over the years allowed me to carry proper tools and parts and after over 3000 hours of running these machines, it was very seldom that I ever had to walk out of the bush.
Of course I have many stories, photos and video's that I could share with anyone interested.

I have operated a manufacturing business now for many years and I would like to offer out there to any owners of later model Prairie Bob-Cats (the Kohler 4 stroke Models) that can provide parts and repair some of the components.
I am also interested in purchasing any of the Jumbo Models which had the 17hp Kohler Engines or the 19hp Kohler Engines.

You can reach me at 250 886 5333 or email me at: jmatei@canadasignal.ca

    • Hi ya all, Thanks for having me on the site. This is my first 6x6, a 2000 Max IV. Me and my boy who also likes hunting and trapping always wanted one but just wasn't in the budget till a man from Louisiana wanted to trade his for a Para plane or powered parachute which I had for sometime. So I decided to do the trade would get way more use out of the 6x6. Looking for info on making it better cause I'm one of those guys that just needs to tinker and try to upgrade and do it the right way. Sites like these makes that possible. Won't hear advise from me cause I have little experience in these machines, so mostly be reading and maybe asking for advice if I can't find what I'm looking for. Again Thanks!

      • Welcome to the site. I’m also in Wisconsin. I’ve got a fleet of Max IV s and have done tons of mods some of which came from this site. I’d be happy to help if you’ve got questions.
What it lacks in ground clearance it makes up for with traction.

              • .012" to .014" for the points on the G50B. There's a manual on this site that covers engines up to and including the G44B and most of the specs are the same.
Stuck in the seventies- not in the swamp.

                (6) Attex, a Hustler, a Super Swamp Fox, (2) Tricarts, (3) Tri-sports, a Sno-co trike, 3 Dunecycles, and a Starcraft! ...so far

                  • Hello everyone,

I've actually never heard of 6x6 ATV's before yesterday (at least not that I can recall), but I randomly came across a couple when I was perusing Craigslist.

I'm looking at selling my Harley Sportster motorcycle for something fun, but a little safer, and that the whole family can enjoy, and these look like they would fit the bill to a T.

I'm from South Central Minnesota, and I grew up, and have lived my entire life in rural areas, from the little bit of reading I've done so far it seems like these types of vehicles may not be as popular in this region, like I said, I've never seen one before, it seems like they may be more popular in southern states from what I've read, but I could be wrong there.

Here are some conclusions/assumptions I've come to so far, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong here.

                    Pros:
They don't get stuck very easily (kind of the whole point)
They float and can move, albeit slowly) on water, this looks like an awesome, and very fun feature.
Mechanically simple - they don't seem to have an excess of parts, and seems mechanically pretty simple, hopefully making them easy to fix by oneself
                    - Would I be correct when I assume you can replace the motors with any small engine, nothing special or brand specific
-Sounds like the T-20 transmissions are very dependable and last a long time (I'm looking at getting a Max IV 6X6, those are the T-20 correct?)
                    Cons:
Not the fastest ATV's (not a problem for me, not looking for fast).
-I'm actually looking for something my boys can drive in a couple years (currently 3 & 4, so not worried about speed).
Bumpy, the videos I've seen of these do not appear to have any kind of suspension (not a problem for me again).

We live right next to a lake with a dirt/mud access, this would be perfect to drive right into the water with my boys for a couple hours of off shore fishing.

Is there anything I should keep in mind before purchasing one of these (Max IV specifically)?
Any known issues, or common problems to check out before buying?

                    Thanks a lot in advance!

                    • hey josh...welcome buddy to the site. i think you stated everything pretty well. these machines are not for going fast , etc. they are for having fun in mud and snow and water. check out some of the past year vides on this site under gatherings and events at busco beach. as for you kids, there are some videos with young ones driving the big 8x8 's with no problems. they are fairly simple to work on and all kind of modifications can be done to fit your needs . lot's of good used max 4's for sale fairly often. keep in touch . if you find a machine you can get plenty of advice here on what to check out before purchasing. johnboy va.

                      • So, I have to come clean at the beginning: while I have ATVs (three, actually), they have zero wheels between them. The vehicles in question are hovercraft and, while the 20HP Kohler wasn't likely used on any 6x6, the two larger craft came with Chaparral G50B engines, like on the Super Chief. I've lurked around here for years gleaning information and thought I should finally come out of the shadows after my most recent acquisition. I'm located in mid-north-central Ohio and near enough the Scioto River to cause problems. Just hoping to learn from others who might have these engines and, one day, find my own 6x6 to add to the mix.

In the event you're interested, you can read about the hovercraft here.

I'll certainly be back if I have any questions, or maybe just to hang out!

                              • Hi Everyone,

My name is Keoni, I'm here in the Atlanta Georgia area looking for some folks with some awesome 6x6 vehicles around the area.

I have a unique request. I'm in Atlanta helping produce a new reality TV show for one of the top 10 Networks. In the first episode of the series we have a challenge that involves contestants driving around some awesome off roading machines! We are really wanting to showcase some of the awesome vehicles that are in this 6x6 world. We are looking for 2 vehicles that can fit 5 people each that we can use in mid October. If anyone can put me in contact with the right people to get this going that would be absolutely amazing.
