    Hi mightymaxIV,
sadly i had never seen the Hoot transmissionsystem in real. I have plans of a struck 6x6 which seems to have a nearly similar system but with 4 belts instead of 3. But this system only works with a very slow highspeed. I think it was about 6 mph in original.
The Hoot seems to be a very good aatv on the description and the movie , but i found a lot good vehicles which were undriveable or unuseable at the second look.
Sadly i dont know a Hoot owner to ask him about his vehicle.

I forget to say that i love the concept of hoot, hopefully it is as good as the manufacturer described it.

I have driven one, the drive system is nice but they area little underpowered and don't have enough ground clearance for me.

Just curious, has anyone ever just hitched a max and and argo together (equal engines and tires, to be fair) to see which one could drag the other back? Thats the way we used to handle little disputes like that years ago when I was in high school. Seems like it was always the old Ford/Chevy battle. Anyway, i've only had my argo a short time, but I would have bought a Max if the same deal had surfaced. To me the Argo looks better, and seems to be built like a tank, but the Max is a great machine and tough to fault. I'd take either.

Most of us are not in high school so we don't risk damaging our machines like that. We do go on rides together and drive the machines in real world conditions. Depending upon the conditions a different manufacturers machine will sometimes shine a little more. The main thing is we all have fun.

This has been an on going debate ever since I bought my Max IV in 2003 . When I first bought my Max , I used to frequent the Route 6x6 discussion board every chance I could , but now , I mostly stay on this forum board if I want to read ,watch amphib video,s , or learn more about amphibs . It has been said both here and also on the Route 6x6 forum board ,,that both the Argo and the Max will each show advantages in certain sections of mud and trail . Its hard to pick a winner , so ride each of the models , of each amphib brand , and then make your own choice , what best suites your needs . Over time you will come to the same conclusions we all have on this forum board .

I read a post one time on the Roure 6x6 discussion board , that said this :

"An Argo looks like a Max goes , and a Max goes like an Argo looks ".

The Argo transmission is different from the T-20 transmission that the Max uses . This is one of the reasons people like a Max . People that have driven both the Max and the Argo , say that the T-20 , thats used in the Max line of amphibs , is easier to steer left or right . But to me , the Argo wins hands down when it comes to build quality and part fitment . It is also more pleasing to the eye . The camo Argo Frontier is one beautiful machine . This will be my next amphib I,m sure . But , I did not buy my Max for its looks , but rather for its function in the places I want to take it . For this purpose my Max IV , 25 hp ,excells .

I definitely want to drive a Max, just to see the difference the T-20 makes. But like I stated above, i'd be happy with either one. Can't see myself going back to the quads in my garage very much, They are much faster but dont swim very well

                  Max or Argo

                  Hey Larry

I have own both Argo's and Max's and have found the Argo's to be better tractors and the Max's make better racer's! The Argo's are built heavier and have low range which allows them to pull heavy loads with little effort which would burn the belt in my Max's. On the other hand my 18 HP Max 2 will run circles around my 18 HP BIGFOOT on a race track.

That won't prove much for the ways we use them. Reminds me of an old photo that used to be on argo's website. Looked like an early model 6 wheeler with 3 executives in it, towing a semi truck and trailer. The runamuks were all wrinkled and torqued, hehe.

Well my reasoning for that "test" was that the argument seems to be that the t-20 enables the Max to have all wheels pulling, while the Argo has the differential tranny. But if the Argo makes a better tractor, then is the T-20 really helping that much? I'm just a little curious, not trying to stir the pot. Again, I didnt care if I got a Max or Argo, I just wanted a 6x6, and the Argo came along first.

                        Max or Argo

                        Hey Mike

Just to back up my prior posting about Argo's making better tractors just check out the factory specs for towing capacity for Max and Argo. All current Max2's, Max4's, and Buffalo Trucks have an equal towing capacity of 1000 lb's. The Argo spec for the 16 HP Vangaurd is 1200lb's and the Avenger EFI 8x8 is rated at 1800lb's.

very interesting. Especially in light of all i've read on here about the T-20 being superior. So I take it this is due the the Argo's low range tranny?

nothing takes the place of low gearing my freind and the argo transmission has it. People have begged Recreative to put a two speed tranny option in the max for years!Extra gear options are always a good thing. There have been many times in a 4x4 when I wouldn't have made it out without a lower gear available!

You need to look at what you are going to be using your AATV for and I would agree that the Max may be more suited for a racer and the Argo would be more suited for utility.
This is also not stating that an Argo can not be used for racing or a Max can not be a work horse either just both have strong points in different applications.

The Max guys will preach about the T-20 and the posy drive differential being the be all to end all. The posy traction is great in a vehicle but with the ability to apply breaks to the left or right side wheels you have the ability to correct for the slip type differential’s short comings.

Both are fun and great machines but I wish Max would come out with some new models and high low gear range. I think that Max should make an Attex clone seeing how popular they were in my pole.

Why do we waste tax money on bridges and roads when we can all just drive AATVs

Everyone seems to be forgetting Recreatives does produce a heavier amphibious vehicle for work....the Buffalo truck. It is not a racer and is better suited for hauling and working than anything else out there.
