Yeah, I still have pictures on the "stuff I need to do" list. I'll get yo it this weekend, I hope.. Mechanically, the 980 was flawless perfection.Tires.. different matter altogether. I was a tad bit too rough on the old tires. I knew they had dry rot and they would not last too long. But I did not expect to shred the sidewalls on 3 of the 6 tires.
So now I need to put the older 21" tires back on. I'm waiting until the ASX come back and Then I'll order a set.

You did an outstanding job on building your machine Dan,,,,, hands downs, a stellar machine, that will be even better with new rubber.
Have you thought of any other tires besides the ASX's? Even though the ASX's are the best all around there are other tires out there that will work well. Being that you have a 980 short tub,, the Mudbugs will really swim on your machine compared to mine, simply because your short tub will channel the water back better. Not trying to get you to get the same tire as I but I'm just saying. Keith likes the Aquatorques, and they were one of my choices that I had in mind before I went with the Maxxis Mudbugs. Also the Swamp Fox Plus is another great tire that does well in mud and in the water, they just don't clean out like the Mudbugs, nonetheless, its still a good tire, and you got a lot of motor to spin the wheels to clean the mud out anyway!! Then there is the Executioners, and the 589's, and the Mudwolf from Carlisle. There are choices out there. I wanted a set of ASX's but now that I have my Mudbugs,,, I'm satisfied!! I know how happy your were to finally ride your Hustler, and its a shame that tires are the only thing that's keeping you from riding it, especially if you have to wait for them to come back out on the market for sell. Just trying to help ya buddy!

I would try out the dual lug Dsx vampire on your shorttub 980. I bet they would swim great. Size 26x9.50x12 but add 2" width because of the dual side lugs and you have a 12.5" wide tire. And there available now for $78.00 eachLast edited by highrollinmopars; 10-23-2012, 08:32 AM.HUSTLER 980 NOS BUILD

Thanks for the input guys. I really like the ASXs. It was love at first sight when I first seen them on Admin Mike's Max4 (err 1) back at my first Busco ride. I don't think the smaller 26x9.50x12 dual lugs would work. I have the wider 12.5" x 12" rims.

I think that if you were to take 12 of the 26x9.5-12 ASX tires and run duals you would be unstoppable....
Nobody has suggested just the standard TSL Vampires... If you could find 11" beadlock rims, the 27x12-11 TSL Vampire would make an awesome AATV tire. I have that size on my Honda Big Red and they are awesome. I would have them on my Hustler but it's just a lowly 945 lol. They have the same amoung of sidewall as a 25x12-9 tire, so they ride super good, and the lugs are 1 1/4 inches deep.1983 Hustler 945-HK 627cc Vanguard

There is no Z in Diesel!!

Looks great, Dan. Fred is quite the guy when it comes to field repairs. He saved my weekend at Busco last Spring when the one lateral on my Hustler 980 broke. We took it off back at camp, and Fred and Cory got some angle and cut it to size and welded it right up for me and we were back on the trails in about 20 minutes. It's been working ever since. Thanks again guys!"Looks like you have a problem with your 4 wheeler........you're missin' two wheels there"

It might be awhile before I can take more pictures of my Hustler.. I kinda dropped the wife's camera and it fell into the primary clutch and got eaten while trying to film the engine cooking in the freshly wrapped exhaust. I have not yet told the wife about her camera.. I'll just buy her a new one for Christmas and play it out that I "put it somewhere and I don't remember where.."

I talked to Performance V-twins one time on the phone about building peformance pipes, and for the best performance from a V-twin briggs engine you want your pipe lengths to be around 28-30" inches long. Having one pipe that much longer than the other pipe is going to make your engine loose low end torque and HP too.Last edited by mudbug3; 12-10-2012, 09:30 PM.
