  • Pros and cons Argo Frontier Hd vs. The MaxIV with the water cooled 27 horse Kawasaki

I am in the last phase of getting the MaxIV together. I have now installed the Timken HD bearings on four axles, replaced two inner bearings, the rear chains that drive the back and middle wheels were starting to get some slop so I took my old snap idles loosened the chains and installed the snap idles, the main idea was to keep the chains off the tub floor but the snap idles work great and I would highly recommend then for the rear chains for MaxIV owners who are tired of having the chains slap the tub.

The output sprockets on my T-20 are the twelve tooth special, there are good and bad things about these gears; the bad part is I had to remove two links from the T-20 chains, the standard Max chains were simply to long and there was so much slop that the chain adjusters would touch the sprockets. With two links removed the right side had just enough play to get the chains on and the left side is very tight and has no play what so ever, however I am sure it will stretch after about an hour of use and I will take up the slack with the normal MaxIV T-20 adjusters.

All the sprockets and chains are perfectly lined up and some of this was due to grinding the HD collars on the inside bearings to make sure everything line up. HD Bearings require a lot of custom fitting. When I finally got everything done with the bearings and chains it was time to reinstall the engine. I drained most of the old fuel, put in a new fuel filter and put some fresh fuel in the tank with some marine additive. I charged the battery for two days but I couldn’t get it to hold a charge so it was replaced with a new one. When I finally got the engine and new battery hooked up I turned the key and let the fuel pump run a minute too insure the engine would have a fresh charge of fuel. After that I chocked the engine and cranked it. Much to my surprise the engine cranked immediately and ran extremely well.

I took it for a quick ride to make sure everything worked right, at first it was a little stiff but everything loosened up and with in minutes I was hot Roding the machine and turning on a dime. Everything was working very well and there was no noise from the chains. The belt squealed a little bit when I made a left turn, but that big 27 horse engine is on rubber mounts and when you turn left the engine mounts move a little to one side and causes a slight misalignment but it was nothing major and worked better as the machine ran a little while.

I forgot just how much power that Max has with the 27 horse Kawasaki engine, this combined with a red spring clutch, and a 12 tooth output sprocket and the 22” Argo tires makes this machine hit hard with all kinds of low end power that the standard Max never had. Just how much power you ask? I can only answer a lot more power and acceleration than the 23 horse Briggs in my Argo HD.

I chose the Argo 22” swimmer tires on Argo rims to advert clearance problems with Adair tracks. These tires provide an excellent ride and I was able to cross over trees and limbs with a lot less effort then the standard 26 inch terra tire that came with the Max.

Max owners if you use Argo rims on a Max you are going to have to buy lug nuts because the standard Max bolt with not properly seat the Argo rim
Finally after I was sure everything else was right I brought the machine back and started to install the tracks.

    More later

      What I found out

solar cells on the front of the house 069.jpgsolar cells on the front of the house 072.jpgsolar cells on the front of the house 066.jpgsolar cells on the front of the house 083.jpgsolar cells on the front of the house 081.jpg

After I was done setting up my Max I installed a set of the 16" wide Adair tracks, I had my problems but finally got them on. In the process here is what I found.

      1. The sixteen inch tracks are more stable then the 14 1/2 inch wide tracks.

      2. Turning the Max on the drive way with tires was difficult, with the tracks installed the same maneuver was very, very easy.

      3. I was happy I chose the 22" tires because once I took off the rivets in the low spot of the Max tub there really wasn't a clearance issue.

      4. The combination 22" tires, red spring clutch, 12 tooth output sprocket and 27 horse water cooled Kawasaki engine made this machine an absolute beast!

      5. With the 22" tires I gave up 1/2" of ground clearance but the machine still has between 9 1/2 to ten inches of ground clearance and the 22" tires lower the over all gear ratio of the machine and give it that much more grunt.

      6. The suspension seat sits very low in the machine and the machine can be driven like a sports car-the 16" wide track hasn't banged my tub yet and that is with some pretty agressive drving.

      7. I have much more control with the T-20 transmission then I had with my Argo HD

      8. I can drive the Max at a much faster pace in trail riding situations and the suspension seat does wonders for smoothing out the ride.

      9. With the water cooled engine sitting behind me I don't feel the heat that I did in the Argo.

      10. The Argo is much easier to clean out- floor pans are tight and come out very easy and the chains in the rear of the Max make clean up difficult.

      11. The Argo is a beast but the Max is more fun to drive

      12. The Max sits 66 inches wide (I have 1.75 inch wheel spacers on both sides) and is an absolute blast to drive.

      13. After I Installed the tracks I played a little in the woods around my home. What had been difficult with tires was now nothing short of easy with the tracks.

      14. So how will the Max preform in mud when compared to an Argo Hd? That will have to wait for another day, but so far I am extremely excited about my Max wearing a new set of Adair 16" wide tracks

I plan to replace the steel winch cable with a yellow nylon cable that doesn't rust, they also look and work much better.

          That about sums it up.

High Rollers, wow I am really looking forward to running with your Hustler, but I really think you under estimate what your Hustler is going to do. It should be absolutely awesome with the 25" RawhideIII's. You have an awesome machine, call me when you have it ready, maybe I can get Lee with his 650 Frontier with the Generec 30 horse engine and Adair tracks to come and join us, it would be just awesome to run around in the swamps around your home with an Argo, a MaxIV and a Husler all set up with Adair tracks.

Some pictures of the max climbing over a huge fallen tree

This will give you a little idea on what this Mighty Max is caple of. First let me say I would never try this with tires. I tried a fallen tree like this once before with tires and broke an engine mount.

Second let me say with a set of Adair tracks obstacles like this are not ever an issue. I pulled the Max up to this fallen tree hit the gas and went right over. I came back around and climbed the same fallen tree going the other way with out an issue.

I am so impressed with the capabilities of this MaxIV with the Adair Tracks. If anyone in the Savannah area would like to go on a ride an see this set up for yourself let me know and we will set a date.

Now be honest Dan. I bet you might think about tackling this tree with your HD but I am willing to bet that after you crested it and the front end slammed to the ground you would have second thoughts about doing it again.

I loved my Bigfoot with Adair tracks and just hated the nose heavy aspect of driving it on the trail. I think this is what really makes the Max IV fun to drive is the balance. Great pictures, hope you can get a ride together and share more.

Nice looking machine. I knew it would be capable. Yes, the rear weight bias comes in handy for going over obstacles. I've not got the Adair tracks on my Max4 yet but they are coming in the next few months.

Noel, I really love the 16" design, they are very stable on the machine and allow me to drive the machine in a very sporting manner. I doubt that they are as good in the mud as the ones using steel plates and open grousers but I absolutely love this 16" design. Then there is the new belted design, quiet, durable. Wow so many options, however for the type of driving I do and the area I live in, I think the 16 inch wide tracks are the best all around track for me.
