I am in the last phase of getting the MaxIV together. I have now installed the Timken HD bearings on four axles, replaced two inner bearings, the rear chains that drive the back and middle wheels were starting to get some slop so I took my old snap idles loosened the chains and installed the snap idles, the main idea was to keep the chains off the tub floor but the snap idles work great and I would highly recommend then for the rear chains for MaxIV owners who are tired of having the chains slap the tub.
The output sprockets on my T-20 are the twelve tooth special, there are good and bad things about these gears; the bad part is I had to remove two links from the T-20 chains, the standard Max chains were simply to long and there was so much slop that the chain adjusters would touch the sprockets. With two links removed the right side had just enough play to get the chains on and the left side is very tight and has no play what so ever, however I am sure it will stretch after about an hour of use and I will take up the slack with the normal MaxIV T-20 adjusters.
All the sprockets and chains are perfectly lined up and some of this was due to grinding the HD collars on the inside bearings to make sure everything line up. HD Bearings require a lot of custom fitting. When I finally got everything done with the bearings and chains it was time to reinstall the engine. I drained most of the old fuel, put in a new fuel filter and put some fresh fuel in the tank with some marine additive. I charged the battery for two days but I couldn’t get it to hold a charge so it was replaced with a new one. When I finally got the engine and new battery hooked up I turned the key and let the fuel pump run a minute too insure the engine would have a fresh charge of fuel. After that I chocked the engine and cranked it. Much to my surprise the engine cranked immediately and ran extremely well.
I took it for a quick ride to make sure everything worked right, at first it was a little stiff but everything loosened up and with in minutes I was hot Roding the machine and turning on a dime. Everything was working very well and there was no noise from the chains. The belt squealed a little bit when I made a left turn, but that big 27 horse engine is on rubber mounts and when you turn left the engine mounts move a little to one side and causes a slight misalignment but it was nothing major and worked better as the machine ran a little while.
I forgot just how much power that Max has with the 27 horse Kawasaki engine, this combined with a red spring clutch, and a 12 tooth output sprocket and the 22” Argo tires makes this machine hit hard with all kinds of low end power that the standard Max never had. Just how much power you ask? I can only answer a lot more power and acceleration than the 23 horse Briggs in my Argo HD.
I chose the Argo 22” swimmer tires on Argo rims to advert clearance problems with Adair tracks. These tires provide an excellent ride and I was able to cross over trees and limbs with a lot less effort then the standard 26 inch terra tire that came with the Max.
Max owners if you use Argo rims on a Max you are going to have to buy lug nuts because the standard Max bolt with not properly seat the Argo rim
Finally after I was sure everything else was right I brought the machine back and started to install the tracks.
