I broke Two motor mounts on my MAX IV and the Adair tracks on it at about 100 hours on the machine. I found these to replace them cheap and they have a lot better load capacity and dropped right in. McMaster-Carr Part #9376k54

Wow thanks Mark, I have been looking for a good replacement engine mount for awhile. Not really sure but I believe I have now broken eight mounts, the back left one at least four times, so I am ready for a little stronger unit.

I noticed the dog house or engine cover was starting to show some signs of rust, so i masked it off and painted the vents.

I also installed the back seat and put in the floor boards, the beast is now really to hit the swamps, mud, woods or what else I throw at it!

A blue nylon replacement cable is on the way to replace that nasty rusted winch cable.

Dan: what year is the Max4? The motor mount issue is from the engine torque. I've always considered 27hp to be a bit much for the smallish stock mounts. The McMaster-Carr units look they will be a permanent fix.

It's a 2007 Noel, and I agree the mounts are not strong enough for a 750cc water cooled engine, the mounts are pretty easy to change, except the the left rear, that pretty much requires pulling the engine, can you guess which mount breaks most of the time? Any way I am greatful to Mark for sharing the McMaster Carr link since these weak mounts have been an issue for awhile. Also, since we mentioned McMaster Carr that is a good place to buy snap Idle chain adjusters for the rear chains on the MaxIV, these adjusters work really well on the rear chains and keep the chains from banging the tub.

Glad to help, I thought it was just me that was being too rough on my toys.
These will have a larger rubber area than the stock ones, for one of the mounts I had to push out on the tub about 1/4" to get it to drop in.
and I didn't notice any more vibration with them over the stock ones.
I feel mine broke because of the extra weight of the engine sitting so high and not the torque. I broke the two on the clutch side, which get compressed during acceleration. I think too much torque would rip the flywheel side up because it is lifting up on that side. My MAX has been at almost every angle (except upside down luckily) and that is a lot of weight hanging on the top of that tee-pee motor mount.

Agreed Mark, all good points, you don't think about that kind of stuff until you take out the rear seat and watch the abuse these mounts take. I got the new mounts in the mail today and they look a lot beefier then the stock mounts. Hopefully I can say good bye to mounting problems on the Max.

Mine came in the mail today too. They are about twice the diameter of the stock units. Here are my 18.5" over 25" Rawhide IIIs next to Tim's 16.5" over 22" Argo tires.



Maybe I am lucky not to have broken one yet?

Finally got the blue Synthetic winch cable installed, got the grills on the dog house (engine cover) painted, rear seat installed, floor pans in place and everything adjusted and ready to go. Anyone in the Savannah area interested in a ride let me know, I am looking very strongly at a trip to the Big Nasty ATV park in Effingham County Georgia this week end, or possibly and trip down to some public land at exit 231 off of I-95 in Florida.

Grounding strap issues on the MaxIV

I should know better, I have had grounding strap issues before, but let me caution all MaxIV owners:

You come out to your MaxIV one day and try to start your machine: Nothing happens. Your lights are working, your winch is working, your battery has plenty of juice but when you turn the key the starter clicks or makes no sound at all! What's wrong????? Before you do anything on that MaxIV check the grounding strap that goes from the frame below the right rear engine mount to the steel engine pedestal. It's not good enough if this mounting point is just tight. The area where the grounding strap bolts to the pedestal has to be clean and lubed and then properly tightened. This is the first thing you should check if your Max doesn't turn over. At least 3 times I have problems with this area being dirty or the grounding strap not being bolted tight enough to make a good connection. Remember this is the area where all the mud and grime that gets into your tub travels to and this grime and sludge can foul the ground in a military minute.

So please learn from my mistake and check your grounding points first!!!!!

I have had trouble with the other ground off the battery loosening up. It has a nylon insert lock nut but kept backing out. Then it would start running like it was out of fuel because it is fuel injected. I just put a longer bolt in with a jam nut to lock it.
