  • MaxII build

Hey guys got a older 80s model max II and was going to do a build thread as I am a complete noob and not greatly mechanically inclined. This way everyone knows that if I can do it anyone can. I will post pics hopefully tomorrow. So far I've got the body off electrical stripped, and all the axles out. I want it to be ready for duck season so will not be going all the way until after season ends. My buddy is finishing the 18hp Briggs were putting in and it will go back with a t20. Hopefully will get axles cleaned up and new bearing in them this weekend. Hope to also have tub and body cleaned up as well by this weekend. Wheels should be sandblasted and either powder coated or painted. After season I plan to strip it again, new chains, blast and pc frame, winch, tracks?
All input comments and suggestions are GREATLY appreciated!!!!

Sounds like your on the right track. Powder coating is Deff the way to go. I don't some on the side and the finish is so superior and strong. If I could have fit my frame in my oven when I rebuilt mine I would have powder coated it as well.

Word of advice tho. I planned on using mine on the swamps of Maryland for sika deer hunting. Well. The other week I finally got to test it out on the swamps. Didn't do so hot. Even new beefy tires still got me stuck. 3 times. All my friend were right. I needed tracks. So that's my next investment hopefully. The thing is a blast tho don't get me wrong. But if your gonna be in any type of mud or muck like a swamp, tracks are the way to go. And espically a winch.

Would sandblasting the axles be ok? Didn't know if that would make them too coarse? Wasn't sure

I wouldn't recommend sandblasting the axles.......simply wire wheel the rust off them.

Ok. Once I get the tub cleaned out this weekend I'm gonna have to take some detailed pics and y'all gotta help me identify what I need lol and what I'm missing. I want to have everything ready for when motor gets done to just put motor and trains in and be good

Axles are out. Every nut on this thing so far has been 9/16 and it's absolutely awesome. Might get a little cleaning on it done this afternoon before wife makes me go to town. Once I get fairly clean I will get some pics up and recap of what I've done so far. Does anyone have or know where a pic would be of the frame axles chains sprockets etc etc so I can compare and see what I'm missing and need to be getting?

              This should help:

Guided Tour of the Max II - Amphibious Six-Wheel Drive All-Terrain Vehicles: MaxATVs - Call 1-800-255-2511

Click the "technical features" tab at the top. It's a newer model with disc brakes and splined axles, but everything else is pretty much the same.

Ok guys chains are soaking in oil. Got tub cleaned pretty well today(will be better after duck season) but took some pics and I plan to start going through and seeing what I'm missing. Do y'all see anything from these pics(if they work) that I missing in there?

If your chains were rusty, you are probably better off trashing them and getting new ones..The rusty ones could wear out your sprockets prematurely.

Your picture links do not work. Often when using links to another site, you cannot use your editing link. You must get to the pictures/video the same way the rest of us would, then copy/paste the address from that page. OR post them here on 6x6World http://www.6x6world.com/forums/6x6-w...-pictures.html

Here's the link to his album....

I'm with Jim. Based on the picture, I'd toss those chains. They might be better close up, but they'll chew the snot right out of your sprockets, and will likely cause more problems than they're worth.
As far as what you're missing, I think you've got most of the basics, but I don't see your parts pile. Without going back to the rest of the posts in the thread, have you really done a diligent check on the bearings to see if you have any play? I'll go out on a limb and say that they're probably original. Any low rumbles, grinding, or tight spots in them when you jack the machine up and spin the axles?

You Da Man Mike! Along with being a first rate roll cage tester...you are a A1 picture finder...scholar/gentleman etc.

After seeing the pictures: Give up on finding a cover for the engine. It has been cut out, and is way too big for any stock cover to fit.
Your frame is an old one with no reinforcement. Pull it out and check it well for cracks, then add the reinforcements, for a lot less flex.IMG_0693.jpgIMG_0691.jpg Notice the round bar (approx 1" dia.) that goes side-side by the axles.
I don't see a seat/front floor, do you have that? I would plan on a complete restoration, with new bearings, bushings, chain, etc.
What should determine if it is a savable machine or not would be things like:
                      1) transmission.....big $ if too much is missing or bad
                      2) condition of axles/sprockets....IF you can get them apart without melting the tub w/ a torch, check to make sure the sprockets are not "shark finned", and axles are not bent. The old 3 bolt axles are easy enough to come by, but do you really want to buy 6? Your machine may also be old enough to be #40 chain axle-axle. If so, I wouldn't put a 4 stroke in it.
                      3) engine... can you get it running? to convert to a 4 stroke, add $250 for a new clutch to the price of a motor.
                      4) lower tub.... yours appears to be in good shape from the pictures. Is it? Will it float without major patches? A new top is easy to add later, but the bottom really isn't.

As I said before, Make a list of what you need BEFORE you start putting money into it. It could add up to more than just buying a nice machine that is ready to ride.

Edit: I forgot a BIG one... 5) Wheels and tires are very expensive and can make/break a restoration. They are also HARD to find used. Figure around $600 for wheels and tires, and thats for the basics, not for big, bad aggressive mud tires.

i plan on doing a complete restoration after duck season but wanted to get it going and use it this season. I can agree with you on the frame....another option i have had it to remake a whole new frame at work(not sure yet i may just reinforce depending on how busy of winter i have)
I have got my materials at work and have been working on seat ideas so that is covered.
Floor board is same as seat, measurements are at work and waiting on this job to be done so i can get the scrap metal to build em.
Buddy is finishing transmission weve worked out a deal on em, he was putting new brake bands in his and he said for mine and 50$ i could just have his(hes always great to help me out on stuff i dont know about and me with him lol) he had alot of the exra parts to put in that one
I plan to use this week (depending on work) to work on the motor i have recieved. I also have another 2 stroke option and 4 stroke option im trying to explore but it looks like i need to stay in the 2 stroke area? my concern with a 2 stroke was the volume level(need to be as quiet as possible for hunting)
How can i find out if my chains are #40?
All axles and sprockets were able to be hand broke and removed with little effort(made this guy very very happy)
bearings are smooth with no tight spots and no noticeable play in them
Axles are not bent or show signs of stress
Where and how do i need to check bushings?
Lower tub great shape not really any scrapes or anything on bottom......there are two holes in the back are they for draining?
I need one wheel and not sure on my tires yet im still disecting to see if they are worth me saving.
Thanks so much guys keep the info coming im learning sooo much but have sooo far to go

Your frame really didn't look like it was rusted bad...I'd just repair and reinforce it. Then paint it well to keep the rust away.
I have several old floorboards, but shipping them is probably more than they are worth. Maybe someone closer to you has an extra?
Wow, It's great to have a buddy like that...does he want to be my friend? How many t-20's can I send him? LOL
For chains, the #40 is 4/8" or 1/2" pin to pin, the #50 is 5/8" pin to pin.
The bushings are inside the end of the axles. (basically an inner bearing) There should be minimal slop in how it fits on its pin surface. They often wore out because there was no way to grease them.
The 2 small holes in the rear of the tub are drain holes....you can use caplugs to fill them. They often do fall out, so check them before going in the water...and carry extras.
Here's a cheap wheel 8X7 5 Bolt Silver Bell Trailer Wheel | RecStuff.com For the tires, try slime and NOT tubes. hopefully it will work.
Actually, Slime is water based and can rust the wheels from the inside....I like 50% slime and 50% antifreeze w the aluminum flake sealant in it. So far it has worked for me.

im definitely going to try that on the tires. Weve got some stuff at work that is the crap. its some kind of industrial slime and it looks like cake batter we put it in our backhoes and bobcats. does anyone have dimensions on their seats for the maxII im gonna try to get one started today at work(since boss wont be there any this week) and as far as the back engine cover could i make something like out of some lightweight diamondplate and just make some holders to bolt to it or is that not a good idea. Really wanting something back there so can tie decoys and eventually fab a gun rack up. was thinking maybe diamond plate cuz thinking about diamond plate for my floors but not sure yet

Ok I know this is a retarded question but I gotta ask it in hopes of help. What all little knick knack things should I have for inside of max. Basically the Frame is sitting in there and the chains and sprockets.....I'm working on seat and building a cover for engine....turning levers are intact as well. Where do I go from here and what do I need? I'm working on looking as I'm typing this.
