  • Max IV work in progress. (Coyote)

This is my Max IV I bought a few months ago. It was in sad shape when I got it. A produce company had it. Not sure what they used it for, but they did not take care of it.
I got it pretty cheap. I am going to have to get another transmission due to mine is missing most of the parts. The max came with a 18hp briggs. I have plans on hopping the motor up after I get drive train back together. So far I have done the split shift mod.
Made new control levers. Installed heim joints on shifters & control levers. Cleaned out old gas, installed new fuel line, making new wiring harness, all new electrical. Old bearings were shot. Will order new bearings & chains next week. New floor board mounts for aluminum floors. I am excited on getting this max back together, I have never even driven a 6x6 before. It is a work in progress. Tell me what you think or any ideas.
    Here is a video:

Looking like you know what your doing with the fabricating work. Soon as I get mine back together we can go give 'er hell. That will have you REALLY motivated! I like the split shift and I will be doing a version of that with Hiems like yours at some point. Also I like the inner Zerk extension idea you have too. Let me know if I can help with anything.
6X6 toys...... now THAT is down right American!

All right, I have been tied up with work for awhile now. Now its time to get back on the MAX..... I am getting ready to order my new transmission. I have been thinking about the power plant for the max. I am not a stock person, never have never will. Just thinking about the stock 18hp briggs just makes me feel like going out side and cutting grass. Any way I found a 2003 suzuki sv1000, it is a vtwin 996cc engine, fuel injected. I plan to run a chain off of the motorcycle transmission to a jack shaft witch will have the cvt on it.. motorcycle engine turns up to 11000 rpm, so if the trans is in 6th gear the out put is about 6000 rpm turning the cvt. The vtwin has a lot of plenty of torque and horse power.. i know this subject has been covered before but I still wanted to get some opinions??? Also has anyone found out when the vampire asx's are coming back out?

I think there was a guy in the wanted section looking for a trans case half, and Mike was looking for an output shaft, will help offset the new trans cost some.
Rest of the build looks real good, hope to see it at Busco in the fall.

Where do you plan on ordering your new transmission from? I know Amphibious Drew has an extra T-20 he was looking to sell for $575. As far as what direction to go with the engine, I'd say rather than putting the SV1000 engine in the Max, build that Briggs 18HP up by consulting Al at Performance V-Twins You can get A LOT of power out of a Briggs 18HP Vanguard, plus it won't take nearly as much time to build it compared to all the custom work you'd have to do for getting the SV1000 engine in there. Plus, the Briggs setup would be a bit easier to drive rather than shifting gears and worrying about all the linkages and what not. Also, the 1000cc sportbike engine might shorten the life a bit of the T-20 even though they're tough as nails. If you want something that will be reliable and powerful and fast, stick with the performance build of the Briggs. And the Super Swamper ASX Vampires should be out at the end of the month if all goes smoothly over at Interco. I hope to be hearing from them soon.

I thought about hopping up the briggs but I now the engine is 17 years old so I would have to do a complete rebuild so the lower end could handle it. The bike engine came about from a friend who had it in his shop for years and I could get it cheap. I was thinking of buying a used t20 or just spend the money on a new one from RI.

There are a lot of ways to up your HP with a Briggs and most of them are simple. I got me a Bando Briggs from 600 racing and love it. I will be looking forward to seeing your Max in action but I will have to wait until the Spring ride since I will not be back from Afghanistan until the end of Oct or first week of Nov. Me and Fred have alot of work to do in order to get ready but write it down I will be there with the family.

I have started back on the max iv build. I ordered my bearings so I started cleaning the bearing housings. Replaced idler sprockets. I ordered a new transmission for the max. I ordered my tires and now have them mounted on my rims. I still need to repair one small hole in the lower tub. Once that is done I will drop the frame back in. Tomorrow I will finish up the transmission brackets on the frame. Lots to do but it will get done. Still need to order some #50 chain.

A little constructive criticism: I have done the split shift with a lever on each side of the seat before, and it seemed like a really good idea. In use, it was less than convenient.[IMG][/IMG]

On my latest project, I opted for the levers on the same side of the seat. The throttle being on the right hand stick, so shift levers on the left hand side, and close enough together so both can be moved at the same time.

Thats a nice set up on the split shift. I do like how they are on one side. I like any idea I can come across. I might need 4 hands to drive this thing when I'm done but its going to be fun.

I finished cleaning up all of the sprockets and bearing housings today. This Max sure has not been taken care of in the past. I also finished making my extra transmission support brackets. I tore down the 18 hp briggs last night. I wanted to see how bad the motor was. So far it looks pretty good. I will probably go ahead and install new rings and a new cam. I will be removing all of the old governor. Also found the stator was badly damaged with a few magnets on the flywheel. I'm still trying to decide on motor choices. I may go ahead and turn the 18 hp into some thing nasty or a great performance motor for back up as I go.

Well I cleaned all of my flangges for my bearings and sprocket s. My bearings came in yesterday so its time to go get all new bolts. I made new mounting brackets for the t20. The t20 wont go no where now. I will try and post some pics this week. I have got to go ahead and repir the small hole in the lower tube so I can put the frame back in. So I can put the axles in and see what my new tires look like on the max. Tires came in last week so I had them mounted on the rims. Im hoping my new t20 transmission will be here today. Im starting to see some progress so I am getting excited.
