Jim, those were provisions for dual propellers. I think jpswift1 posted some photos. I'll see if I can find them.

Edit: Here is a thread from Jeff http://www.6x6world.com/forums/max-a...ropellers.html but I thought there were photos somewhere that actually showed the propellers.

The folks at Recreatives believe that there are technical drawings for the gear boxes that were driven off the two rear axles to power the dual rear propellers. I don't know if these were ever in production or not though. All of the tubs like that were ABS plastic before they went to HDPE.

Called the nice people at Recreative today, they said my RIM 4 seater #10539 was made in December 1976. Did they call them Max's back then?

They sure did. RIM, which was just the name for the early Max IV's. RIM stands for Recreation Industry Military, if I remember correctly. And they've always been called Max ever since Recreatives started in 1969.
