  • My buddy Normable1973 needs a new clutch

Hey Norm, sorry to hear about your clutch issue. I'm posting this thread so everyone, if any doubt, will know where I purchased my clutches. These are stock clutches for our machines. They are very competitively priced:

Recreatives Max Clutches | ATV Parts | MFG Supply .

I hope this will help you out. I would also check ebay as well!

Depending on your engine it is either a 1" bore or a 1-1/4" bore. T-20 is a 7/8" bore. My B&S 23hp vanguard is 1".

No prob Norm, just make sure that you measure the shafts and bores and such like Dan67 mentioned.

The T-20 uses a clutch that has a 7/8" bore.

Norm, did the two helix halves just fly apart? The C-clip that holds the internal helix can have a nasty tendency to break on some old units. Your clutch might not be complete junk if you can just replace the clip or the inside helix (if it was damaged). Don't toss it; there's always a need for spare parts....

For some reason I was hearing squeaking and the clutch was awful close to the sprocket(chain) that's what I think happened chain somehow hit clutch & broke c clip? All that got destroyed was the buttons, spring, and outer sleeve. I think I need shims . My drums are also in bad shape the guy I bought it from just put new band in it(I also have the old ones) I wire wheeled them but not much better. (RR says he has bigger bands so you can turn the drums .020 ) what do I do??? HELP

                    Shims???
Avoid dealing w/ RR. He's trying to sell you "special" bands that are not special. The drums can be turned .030" with no problem, any more than that and things need to be test fit to make sure it's OK.
Here is an old post on the drums: http://www.6x6world.com/forums/trans...html#post46427

I'll pull it apart tom, I think if I take it down .030 it should be good. I gotta make sure the bands are on correctly, everything else was put together wrong. How do you tell if they are wrong or right. Also I have the trans out now and the shaft where the clutch goes on moves in and out about an inch, is this correct.? I also just used permatext where the trans comes together. Is that bad?

Norm, it sounds like you need to treat it like a complete overhaul. Inspect everything, and I suspect you will need some new parts in there.
I'll send you a PM with my email address for sending pictures.
The input shaft should move about 1/8". If yours moves 1" it means you either lost a retaining clip or have a worn out center plate....I'm betting on the center plate to get that much movement w/o the shaft coming all the way out.
You also need to buy a seal and gasket kit from R.I. You will find out that silicone sealing the case halves together will make it a P.I.T.A. to get back apart. You could soak the whole trans in gasoline or other solvent to make the silicone release. Again, a Pain I.T.A.
For the bands, right/wrong, They can get turned backwards if a loop is pulled through the center, but they will look twisted if that happened. The only other thing to look for is one end should have a small amount of the bend taken out, effectively straightening it to hook to the plunger.....this one is not such a big deal, and if flipped, or not straightened, they seem to work fine.

Okay has anyone had problems getting the trans apart? I've had it apart once bout a month ago but this time it's stuck together, it will come apart 1/4 in but that's it. I put it together with gasket maker do you think the plate might be holding it. Any suggestions? Just got my new clutch in and everything to get it going..... HELP.. Thanx.. Norm....

RUBBER MALLET, SMALL PUNCH, DIESEL FUEL ON SILICONE, ELBOW GREASE, LOTS OF SWEARING ohh and REMOVE THE C-CLIPS,,,,,,, there is the recipe! DAN67 had a similiar problem with his T-20,,,, shoot,,, we all have had problems with the case halves not splitting. The silicone is the culprit,, the factory paper gasket is the best thing for it, but you know how it is,, being impatient, and trying to save a few bucks, so we result to the gasket maker stuff. I've put silicone on all of my T-20's but I made sure that I didnt over-do it. Next time try letting the silicone cure or harded a bit (bout an hour or so), before you marry the halves. Good luck buddy!
