    • Introduction and Questions

Hello everyone. Wanted to start by saying that you all have a wonderful website! The boards, gallery, etc., etc. is amazing and there seems to be some extremely knowledgeable members too.

I am somewhat new to the world of ATV’s. I was given a 1974 Cushman Trackster and a 1980 Hustler. I had the Trackster running 6 or 7 years ago but due to a job relocation, etc. I wasn’t able to tinker with it anymore. It hadn’t run in over 20 years, so working on it was a challenge, but the fun I had on it certainly made it worthwhile. Hopefully once I get the Hustler running properly, I'll get the Trackster primed and running once again.

Most recently I have been playing around with the Hustler, but am having a very difficult time getting it to run properly. I need your help! The Hustler was parked in about 1983 and never messed with until last year. It has the 16 Hp K341 Kohler engine. To date, I have replaced:

      • Fuel line and filter
      • Fuel pump
      • Carburetor
      • Coil, points, condenser, spark plug, & plug wire

It will start and run all day long, but as soon as I attempt to rev it up, it “falls all over its face” and attempts to die unless I let off the gas. I’ve adjusted and readjusted the new carburetor (the old one would only run full choke, but the new one runs w/ the choke wide open) but it still seems to be running somewhat rich. The plug is also pretty black after running it. Obviously I don’t know a great deal about small engines, but it seems to be a timing problem to me. I believe I’ve set the points correctly (assuming TDC is when the piston is at its highest position when viewed through the spark plug hole...again, I'm no mechanic), but am not sure if there is some other sort of timing method I should use. It also has a slight knock when revving it up, so I’m not sure if it’s more serious than I think. Does anyone have any suggestions for me???! I'd like to repair it myself in lieu of taking it to a shop, although my wife would probably appreciate me giving into my temptations and just have someone else fix it for me!

I appreciate the help and once again, great site!

        Hello,

I would suggest you post a thread in the engine section. Probably get a better response.

What does it do with choke on? Better or worse?

          • Thanks. I'll give the other thread a try too.

I don't normally need to keep it on choke too long before opening it up, so don't really notice much difference.

              • Hi from Alberta Canada

I have seen argos around for years and thought they were kind of cool. Bought an old 6x6 this weekend. Think its an 1982 6x6 It has double chain, new bearings on the axles and 6 new tires the engine runs ok. I have 2 teenage boys so this will give us something to tinker on and run about with.
Whats a little gas to save a few steps!

I guess you all know Im new here. I dont have a 6x6 or an 8x8 for that matter. I had and old trail boss about 10 years ago. Im married now and my 8 year old saw some old pictures of my old trail boss and now he wants one. He wanted a quad, but thats when i showed him my pictures. Now all i hear about is a "six wheeler", so Im back to the "true all terrain veichel"
I got my trail boss for 300 bucks but it was in a box, alot of boxes I went through it completly and It was fun but it always broke down. So this time Im am looking for a newer one argo 8 wheeler. But Ive kinda fell in love with the Sur Trek and I want one of them also. So the search begins. I think it will be harder for me cause Im in oregon and there are not as many of them here as there are in the mid and eastern state. But Ill be around and if anyone knowes of a Sur Trek in or close to Oregon shoot me a line.
Thanks for your time and your ears, ~Tim~

                              • swampcat: the one only radio control 6x6 model tank

Hi I'm new here. I built from scratch a 1/6 scale model tank that has 6 wheel drive. It's radio controlled and shoots paintballs. Weighs around 200 pounds. Now that I know what I'm doing I'm going to build another one; bigger, faster, stronger. Unlike the first model, swampcat 2.0 will have either two
water jet drives or props. Anybody have any ideas where I can find a couple of small electric water propulsion systems? When I say small, I mean something around the size of a medium size fire extinguisher. Thanks, Nick Hoke, near Seattle. theswampcat - Home
