    • Hello to all. Like most in this this section of the forum, I'm new to anything with more than 4 wheels. Lots of ATV (4 wheel) and motorcycle experience but finally bought an Argo (96 Conquest) last summer. Been reading 6X6 world for about three years...took this long for me to login. I live in interior Alaska so I knew it would have its uses. Wanted one for years but a little hesitant since no experience. Used it last fall to haul out my moose along with camp for 4.....never could have hauled that much with a 4 wheeler. Also pulled out/along traditional ATV and a side by side UTE on the way in and out. Don't want to bore all with obvious advantages of a 6/8 wheeler. You all know why they're better. I do have several questions and hope all I can be directed to the correct link.
      1) I hope to put a hard top on this summer and need some designs. I have fair amount of metal fab experience (to include aluminum) so am not intimidated by tube design/work.
      2) Tire question (probably find answer on tire thread, but throw it here anyway): still have the original 22" runamucks, want to go to at least a 23" (currently, there is at least 1" between each tire) but don't know which style/brand to go to.
      3) Chains: when to replace? All were dry when I bought it. I replaced the right side to the front wheel immediately and lubed all the rest. At what point in deflection should they be considered worn and need of replacement.
Incidentally, the machine had 121 hours on it when I bought it. Overall in good shape, needs a little TLC. Any and all help will be appreciated. Thanks in advance!!!

Still trying to close the deal. The seller is an active Marine Sgt. and trying to get things in order after just returning home and before he ships out again. Thanks for the info.

        • Hi newguy, congratulations on your semi-recent purchase. The hard top would be something unique. There are a couple of pictures of some in the gallery under the Argo section. The chains are worn when they have either stretched too much or when the rollers become deformed which usually only happens with worn sprockets. If you need more info try starting a thread in the Argo forum and you will get a better response from some of the Argo experts.

          • Bought a 1970 KID 8x8 a couple years ago for use around the cabin (was looking for something I couldn't roll on the slopes) It is gasoline, has 3 pt hitch front and back, came with blades for both front and back (can push some snow with this thing!) I've added a trailer and am working on mounting a sickle bar mower for the front, then need to add a loader bucket, then want to get the PTO on it. Use it more for a tractor than recreation. Have enjoyed the KID postings in the Other Aatv forum. Would be interested in picking up some tracks for it, would prefer rubber if anyone can tell me how to go about deciding the correct sizing. Deal mostly with snow and steep slopes, am at about 7700 ft elevation in colorado Rockies. Looking forward to hearing more from tweeter, southern comfort, and ltv kid.

            • Found this forum tonight during a search for information to add a kill switch to my MAX II with JLO engine and had to sign up. The fuel switch is just slow and makes for hard starts. I haven't found exactly what I was looking for yet but already am enjoying the site for its information and talk. Glad to be here. I have had my MAX for about 4 years but it has been in the shed the last 2 with a transmission leak that I need tackle. I am looking to get it back out.

              • Welcome Brent.

I would suggest that you place new posts in the Engine forum and the Transmission forum with your specific questions. Hope you get your Max back outside and up and running soon.

                  • got it, thanks. As for the chain question, I was looking for standard or stock/new chain deflection without tensioner applied. Since the front wheel/chains do not have a spring type tensioner, I just decieded to replace the right side. Lft got tight with only a couple of turns on the adjustment screw. Lots of knowledgeable folks on this site....didn't want to appear like and idiot. I'll start a thread and remove all doubt!!

6X I had it running in the mid 80s but have just recently started rebuilding it. I am putting a Polaris srambler 400 engine in it and hope to have it running by May 2010.

Welcome to the site!!! Sounds like it will be a pretty quick scrambler when done. You could start a photo album here on the site and have a photo log of the work as it goes along. Good luck with it, hope to see some pictures!
