      • Hello everyone,

I am an avid Allis Chalmers tractor guy. This 6x6 amphibious world is extremely foreign to me. On July 3rd, while doing my daily 'allis' search on CList, an Allis Chalmers Terra Tiger came up and piqued my interest, I didn't even know AC made such a thing. On July 4th, I bought it and surprised my 12-year-old son with it. It didn't start, run, drive or steer... I bought it anyway!! Soph, my 13-year-daughter, initial reaction upon seeing it for the first time was "that's a piece of junk", (at least she's honest) but her words have stuck with me and I named it 'piece of junk'.

Two quick stories, first: my wife, C, filmed a video of James and I working on getting it started, he was holding a funnel full of fresh fuel connected to the carb, I did some pulling, adjusting, cleaning, troubleshooting and praying. The whole time telling James we'll get it going and his sister saying it would never start, and I really felt like he believed me. Then it happened, it started and revved up like it was new! The look on his face in the video was worth the $350 I paid for it. He was so happy I thought we was going to start tearing up. We have been having a blast working on it ever since!

Second: after getting it started and working on some of the mechanicals for a while out in the yard, a $50,000 pickup with two dirt-bikes in the back and pulling a trailer with two 4-wheelers drove by our farmstead. After watching it go by James turned to me and very seriously said, "Look Dad, they only have dirt-bikes and 4-wheelers, not a six-wheeler like us." Again, this probably has been the best thing I have ever done for connecting with him.

I have two restored Allis tractors and an Allis snowblower, and I want this project to be my best ever. James and I have totally taken it apart and I steam-cleaned the fiberglass shell. It's amazing to watch James "wanting to" get his hands dirty instead of "having to" like before. We ordered the steering clutches from Richard's and have a few other parts on there way, $415 is a small price to pay to get this thing going. I know we'll have a lot more into it before it's all said and done, but neither James nor I can wait to make it amazing and have people ask why it's named "Piece of Junk".

        • Jeff, that was a great introduction. Thanks for sharing. I agree that you have already gotten your money's worth. Good luck finishing the restoration. Upload some pictures of it to the gallery once you are done so we can all admire your work.

          Welcome to the forum.

          • Hi everyone. I live in the mountains of eastern AZ and I acquired a MAX IV mostly for my teenage son to play in. He especially enjoys the beach at a local lake where he and friends can repeatedly go in and out of the water. I have had to replace a bent axle and now i'm working on transmission (hard to shift and has developed clunking noise). It is a fun machine and don't get the wrong idea about it's durability. I have had to make similar repairs to a Polaris Ranger and a Toyota pickup he drives. Yes he is also learning some mechanical skills.

            • Welcome toysRme and congrats on the IV, when I was 10 I drove my dad's machine for the first time and broke a roll pin in the old Argo 2 stroke 8 wheeler left front axle. The second time I broke same roll pin again and was told fix it, from then on we've been upgrading, repairing, rebuilding them and now the daughters into it BIG TIME since she has her own machine, which she helped build some.
It's a great bonding item which hopefully you two enjoy for years to come, hopefully he gets tired of fixing it and calms down to enjoy it before you/he's "had enough fixing that darn thing".

My new beer holder spilled some on the trails - in it's hair and down it's throat.

                • Welcome to the group Kevin.980's are sweet machines. Try posting on the hustler section of the forum. Members Jpswift, Don, or Hydromike would probably be able to help you out. They know the hustlers inside and out. Try the forum first. Good luck

                      • I'm a new member and have a 1977 attex 500 super chief. I am in the process of going through it as it was a true barn find. Should I just purchase a new or rebuilt mikuni carb instead of messing with the old one?

                          • Welcome 1977(6x6), if you can afford a new one you can't go wrong, just be sure all the specs are correct for machine and location. If not give it a good cleaning and resealing or have your local 2 stroke guy do it.
SuperChief's are fine machine's though if you expect to do alot of trail riding you'll probably end up 4 stroking it.

I'm only a teen, so don't think I have much experience; because I don't. I joined to learn from everyone here.
I hope I stay for awhile, I have been browsing the site recently (and before I signed up), and it is very informative/interesting.

I read the one article about the one fellow that done it, but does a kit exist ? If anyone as any info please let me know, thanks
