  • New to the 6X6 World

Hello crew, new to this world of 6X6. Just picked up a 2001 6X6 with a 18hp twin Vanguard. Runs well, trying it in the snow today. Want to see its capabilities without tracks before investing in a set or trying to build some. Going to be using it mainly as a snowmobile for the family during the winter months and a tool during summer months. Looking forward to talking to you all and exchanging ideas, stories and adventures.

    Cheers

TrebMaster Thanks for the advice, I saw some handmade tracks made with conveyor belting. Do you know how these work? Are they fused at the ends or bolted together and How is the traction in deep snow?

my ride will still take a long time to hit the road in fact the people say im crazy to try and put life in this old machine. its a 1969 amphicat, assembled in south Africa by hovercraft, unfortunely thats all i know about it except for the serial, model and engine nr that was visible on its id plate.thanx for all the info on the site, i have already ripped it to pieces and is busy scratching my head to get the rusted chassy rebuild.

                • Hi Andre,

Welcome to the site! That Amphicat should draw some attention in South Africa when you have completed your restoration. Post some pictures in the gallery if you get a chance.

                  • Introduction of self

I'm Frank and live here whereweare
The picture is mid summer from a nearby mountain, but pretty shortly we'll have heaps of snow and I use my Max to get up and down the mountain.
I have a Max II ( bought new about four years ago ) with a 26 ( I think ) hp engine. I also have an old Coot and I've put a new engine in it, but still have some lingering problems with the electric starter. Namely, the starter does not disengage once the engine is started.
However, the reason I've stumbled on this board is that my Max II began making a loud pop noise. The noise is sort of spaced out in time like its one spot on a wheel. I found this discussion board and from what I have read so far it appears that the problem is a sprocket and/or chain.
I did open the top, use the shop vac to vacuum out leaves, dirt, mouse nests and etc . and did find that a length of hemp rope had gotten wound around one of the sprockets and was between the chain and sprocket. Thought that was the problem, but it still does it even after I removed the rope. Right now I'm guessing that the rope did lead to excessive wear on a sprocket or stretched the chain, but since the sound is spaced out I rather imagine that a sprocket tooth is the problem.
                    Anyway, Hello everyone.

i did make some out of convayor belt that did pretty good on snow but on dirt or blacktop they walk out. I have started a set using old snowmoble tracks. a little wider and more float on snow. the convayor belt tracks were bolted togeather on the ends

Yesterday and the day before, five Argos met in cottage country in Southern Ontario. Only one guy had tracks. There was a lot of snow. He did a lot of towing. Next time I will have tracks but my roof enclosure was fantastic!

                        • Andre, you might want to talk to 6x6World member Amphiman1 about your machine. He is the expert when it comes to Amphicats. Welcome aboard.
