The chain problem was my fault, i had the rollers on wrong. I finally got it together and it goes good. (i'll post a video as soon as i figure out how to put it on youtube) but yesterday i was driving it around and i noticed theres some grinding noise coming from the clutch side of the t-20. what could be causing this and should i worry about it?1983 Hustler 945-HK 627cc Vanguard

I'll check that, I seem to remember the shifter on that side was a bit worn but i didnt worry about it because it shifted it just fine.1983 Hustler 945-HK 627cc Vanguard

What am I doing wrong?????? Please help this thread seems to have been forgotten.Acta non verba

jersey, i figured out the chain problem and resolved that issue. apparently idler sprockets dont make good tensioners for these machines.....my problem now is a grinding noise coming from the clutch side of the t-20.1983 Hustler 945-HK 627cc Vanguard

It is coming from the the inside of the t-20, on the clutch side. I know it has to be on the inside because it only makes the grinding sort of noise when the stick is pushed foreward.1983 Hustler 945-HK 627cc Vanguard

Does that side of the machine seem to pull when driving? Could be a worn shift collar not fully engaging, which would sound like grinding the gears on a standard auto trans, if you watch the shift diamond, you will see it jump as the gears try to mesh properly. If what you're hearing is more of a scrubbing/squealing/chaffing sound then Racer is correct and you have a band issue that definitely needs attending to before driving ANY more.DESTRUCTION is just a couple of vowels down the street from DISTRACTION

I did a full restoration on this machine(including the trans). I drove it alot the week of Thanksgiving and the first week of December and then the noise started. Before that i took the trans apart and replaced all the bands, bearings, seals, gaskets, washers, and a ring gear drum. I do seem to remember some slight wear on the shifting peg on the diamond shifter(is this my entire problem?) because the shifting linkage wasn't properly adjusted, but I didnt do anything about it because when i put it in and tested it, it seemed to work fine.1983 Hustler 945-HK 627cc Vanguard

If the shifter pins are worn, AND your linkage is slightly out of adjustment, your collars will not fully engage, this can cause premature wear and damage the transmission. Pull the diamonds and check for wear.
Forcing the tranny into gear will also expedite wear of the pins. And those so-called "easy shifters" don't do much to help ease the T-20 hard shift blues. Can you say PITA?!
A split shifter will eliminate having to force shift, a 2 lever system is fairly easy to fab up, and you will not believe how easy shifting is with this type of setup. Really makes me wonder why Max (since Hustler is no longer in business) doesn't offer it as an option. Added maneuverability is a plus, but the split's true value is it's super easy shift-ability. I did one for Mudbug's MaxIV, it worked so well that I tore out my cable/lever system, chopped the factory shift handle up and built one for my Hustler, ain't regretted it either!
Maybe I can get some pics up this weekend - Maybe Friday.--- PossiblyDESTRUCTION is just a couple of vowels down the street from DISTRACTION

I'm not really sure what the noise was, but it was... I pulled the diamond shifter out and there is slight wear on the pin but it doesnt seem to be enough to effect anything yet... anyways, when i drove it today it didnt make the noise...1983 Hustler 945-HK 627cc Vanguard
