  • Chain adjusters?

How do these things work?I pushed down on it to put tension on the chain but when I try to brake that side a few times it moves the tensioner loose again and I start hearing to chain slapping the floor.Does the tensioner need replaced or is there something I need to tighten?

Sounds like you need to tighten the tensioner.

Are you pushing them down hard enough to get them to snap to the next position? I wrote an article on replacing the Teflon guides not too long ago. There are some decent pictures in there that will let you see what I'm talking about: http://www.6x6world.com/forums/gener...placement.html

The metal clip behind them acts as a spring to help keep them in place. I guess it's possible that it is missing on yours?

I looked at the article and was trying to figure out why they would not stay locked in place.I will have to look tomorrow to see if the spring is missing.

You might need new ones due to the teeth being rounded, or they may be on crooked and since they are not alligned perfectly parallel with the chain, they will pop up.

I have a similiar problem. I have one side that makes a anapping noise which I can feel in the body when it happens. I always thought the chain was loose but I am beginning to thing I too need new adjusters as the chain is rrather sloppy. It is a MaxII, and with the large engine it is a real chore to work on at times.

                Temp fix for chain adjusters?

As soon as money permits I will be replacing the chain adjustr/guide.But for now,can I tack weld the 2 pcstogether until they arrive?I am trying to keep the chain from banging the tub/floor.It is only doing this on 1 side and seems that this would be a temporary fix.I have no way of leaving this for good and was not going to worry about reusing the stock adjusters since they would be replaced by a set from Richards.

                  What vehicle do you have?
Your issue sounds exactly like mine in the Frontier.

Why do we waste tax money on bridges and roads when we can all just drive AATVs

This would be for a Max II.

Yes you can tack it. Remember to get the wheels up in the air before you adjust it to the spot where you want it, then tack it.

The adjusters Richard sells are well worth the money and will correct your problem permanently.

Will Richard's work with a Frontier? Anyone know?

the solution isn't buying new poorly designed adjusters its REDESIENING what they use to hold in place as well as how tension is applied!!! the max as well as my sidewinder have poor designs!! ALL chain adjusters SHOULD work on the screw jack principle! screw jacks have been around for many, many years, its the only way to get infinite, effortless and bulletproof performance.NO NOTCHES that only offer limited adjustments.......CHAINS DON'T STREACH IN STEPS OR NOTCHES!!!the inclined plane offers INFINATE AJUSTMENT!! IT NOT ONLY APPLYS PRESSURE BUT HOLDS IT THERE TOOOO! by simply welding a nut on the the top of my slide tracks and using a bolt to apply pressure to idler slide I can make my adjusters easy to use AND impossible to loosen unless I loosen them! simply turn bolt for tension instead of MANUALLY PUSHING DOWN on roller and tightening the horizontal bolt which can MOVE under STEERING, BRAKING AND REVERCE FORCES, SCREW JACKS DON'T MOVE unless you move them! if you need to pull up on rollers or slide simply weld a threaded rod to unit and turn nut to apply pressure just like any motorcycle chain adjuster! even my go cart uses a screw jack to apply pressure to motor mount plate....THEN you tighten slotted motor mount bolts. the lift that holds up my vette is also a giant screw jack....there are no safety "notches" ,its always on safety while raising or lowering or anywhere I stop it....screw jacks don't move unless you move them!!! my idlers and rollers are also a joke!!!..... why would i replace them with new original 1980's technology crap when there are many modern alternatives! here's a link to black ace, there idlers are stronger, quieter and less abusive to your chains and also have replaceable bearings.. Heavy Duty Roller Chain Idlers from Black Ace if you do a little research there are lots of different size and shape rollers slides and glides using modern materials that can be adapted to any machine skid steer chain adjusters, unlike chain adjusters in vehicles with HUB MOUNTED BRAKES and NO REVERCE, are not only "SLACK SIDE TENTIONERS"...but become "POWER SIDE PIVOTS" during braking, steering and reverse!!!!!!!!!!!!!! in my oppinion they should all use ball bearing idlers....not nylon or teflon slides, glides or rollers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
