  • Hi, Joined this group because alot of different members have various aatv's. I have been an atv owner now for over 35 years. 3 wheelers, 4 wheelers, skidoo's, side x side's & argo.
Currently driving a kawasaki Teryx-Special Edition. Loves the ride. Currently driving my son's Yahama 700 4 wheeler and loves that because off the power steering.

I had a 2000 argo conquest 8x8 for 5 years and sold it due to lack of use. I am now realizing that time is waisting and I am longing for that in the back country adventure again. Fishing, hunting and recreation use.

I have been browsing the forums trying to make up my mind on which 8x8 amphibous vehicle to get next. The new Argo's or the Mudd-Ox. From what I have gathered from forums - The newer argo with the admiral tranny that is being used for commercial companies - (Power Lines) have tranny issues. Destruction of tranny has been reported. Many supposed reasons but no apparent explanation or outright fix from ODG yet. Note - I haven't heard anyone chime in having problems with just recreational use.

I have been in contact with Mudd-OX and Matt has certainly filled me in on that machine and all the options he can do for me.

So, I will leave this introduction thread with that and post some questions in the appropriate forum section and hopefully I can make up my mind for the input off others. Altho this can be a very hot topic.

    • Hi my name is Jon and I bought my first aatv, a 2000 max4 last night. It needs just a little work and I am excited to ride soon. I am in WA so if anyone else is let me know, seems like most on this forum and most aatvs I see for sale on ebay ect. are on the east coast. It would be nice to know if there is a presence out west.

      • My name is Steve from Atlantic Canada, Bought a 98 Argo Bigfoot with winch brand new back in the day and after 750 hrs she's still crawlin along - just plowed the snow out of the driveway. Grease Grease and more chain oil is all I can say to keep one of these things moving, worked for me anyway. Never changed a bearing in this thing yet but of course its well over due and thats why I'm here - hope someone knows the fastest most efficient way to do an overhall. I want my argo to float for fishing season again!

        • Hello
It's been a long time coming but I'm finally a proud new owner of a 6x6 aatv. Figured I would join the forum so I could get any questions I may have answered.
My ride is a 19?? Super swamp fox that seems to be in pretty good shape but really needs a bigger engine. Btw my name is John and I am located in the north central part of ky. It looks like you guys have some very nice machines and I will hopefully have some pics of mine up soon.
          Thanks
          John

          • John,

I've got a Super Swamp Fox too. They're GREAT machines......very heavy duty and very well built. Do you have the Tecumseh OH160 in it? A popular engine swap would be an 18-23HP Briggs Vanguard. They, like the Tecumseh have a 1" shaft so you can use the same drive clutch that you currently have on your machine. I'm looking forward to seeing the pics and hearing more about your machine. Welcome to the site!

What he said! We need more pictures of more Swamp Fox machines, and more folks to get them out on the trails! (wink-wink, nudge-nudge....)

              • Hello all,

I recently saw a youtube video of an Argo and became convinced I need a 6x6 or 8x8. Living in the Upper Pennisula of Michigan will afford us (wife, two kids under 3) the oppertunites to explore and enjoy the vast outdoors. I'm certainly not set on an Argo. The decision will be based on local availability and price. Looking forward to reading more on the forum.

                • Hi Mike,
I was logged in and sent my reply but it sent me back to login. Also I would like to post a photo but didn't find a "browse" to my files window, only a "url" request which i am not familiar with the process to create the url. I have a Mac which may add to that issue?

I am trying to find out how to improve drive belt traction. It's been 3 years now on a new belt with still 1-1/8" width & 1-3/4" play and it slips now real bad. Belt dressing used for the first time improved it only a little and only temporary.

                  Thanks for advice

                    • What an influx of new members. Welcome to the forums, all of you. It's great to have you here.

bigdoughball2003, good luck with your decision to purchase another ATV.

jonstewat1979 (Jon), congratulations on your new-to-you Max IV. There aren't a lot of members on this site from the West coast but there are some. Check out the local member section of this site and perhaps start a new thread in that part of the forum to look for others in your area if there isn't an existing thread that you find when using the search.

98Bigfoot (Steve), welcome to the site. I think the best approach for bearing replacement is to just dive in. If you are comfortable with being able to line up the sprockets and chains when you put everything back together, just pull them all out at once and replace them. If you have some hesitation about doing so, you can always just pull one axle at a time.

a5t1, good luck in your search for an ATV.

woodtracs, this thread will tell you how to upload photos: http://www.6x6world.com/forums/6x6-w...-pictures.html This thread will help you fix your issue of being logged out: http://www.6x6world.com/forums/6x6-w...s-logging.html

Muddaddy, hello. This will be a great hobby to share with your son. It sounds like you have really jumped into the hobby feet first. Good luck with your rebuild. I look forward to seeing photos.

                      • Hi,

I live in the Colorado mountains on 36 acres. I'm 62, and have owned MC's, Harley's, YZ490, 400 Maico, 3 & 4 wheelers, you name it. A long time friend of mine wants to trade me a 94 Max II. Couldn't pass it up. Should have it in a few days. I'm surrounded by BLM so I can take it anywhere. The kicker is, I'm a wildland firefighter, actually, if it's on fire, we'll put it out. I think it will be good for firefighting as well as fun. Any suggestions for equipping it would be appreciated.

                          • Hi, My name is Dan (Cadillac MI) , I just picked up a used MAX IV (1998?). New to 6x6 ownership. I am in the process of stripping it down to complete some rear frame repairs (the trans got loose at some time and the frame rails need repair) and bearing replacement... anyway, I have a couple of sprockets that I can't get the inner set screw loose and the brake disc are frozen on the axle shaft. Any suggestions?

                            • Hi Dan. Welcome to the forums and to 6x6 ownership. For your stuck parts, I would start by soaking everything in penetrating lubricant overnight if you haven't already. I've had great results with PB Blaster. Then use as much leverage as you can when trying to remove the set screws. Use a box wrench on the end of the allen wrench for example. You may also want to tap the wrench down into the set screw gently with a hammer to break it loose. Finally, you could try using a little heat. Good luck with the rebuild.

                              • Thanks, got all the set screws out (It took five parts stores but I found 3/8" socket with a 1/8" hex allen) ...working on day three with the PB blast, heat, etc... I am going to need some advice and a source for the bearings. I don't have them all out yet but the rear inner bearings are different then the center inners?
