I have an axle that will fit it, and I might have the sprocket. The sprockets I have came from an earlier machine and were not the same as the ones in my 980. Good luck getting it up and running. Good engine and T-20, Id say you did great for $400

    • hustler is spending the night in the swamp!

hi , i bought a huster about 2 weeks ago. gave it the once over. got a few new parts from richard . they came in today , threw them on and away i went . ran great for 20-30 min. and choked out like it ran out of fuel? checked the lines and filter, all good , no spark . seemes like after it gets warmed up the coil loose fire, ?? new coil? what say you? anyway i decided to let it spend the night in the swap. maybe it will have a better additude in the morning. i did notice a spark beween the front of the engine cover and the frame when turning it over. the previous owner has wired this thing with extention cords. if i new what went where i'd rewire it right. old 18 hp briggs opposed.engine kill is not hooked up to key have to choke it off. any help appreciated. thanks Russell

      • Sounds like your engine is not properly grounded to the frame. The rubber engine mounts are insulating the the engine and mount plate from the frame. A small jumper wire (10 gauge works best) from the engine mount bolts (where the engine connects to the mount plate) to the main frame. This would account for the sparking if your engine cover is brushing against the frame.

        • Thanks i'll look at that when i go back to it int he morning. wandering if that coil is going out when it get s hot , or if its something else causing it to lose fire after a short ride. i got wires everywhere that dont go anywhere. anyone no what goes where , or a diagram. i dont even know what year it is.suppose that would help.thanks

          • It may be your coil, but I would check that ground first. (Might save you $30...) Not really sure on the year, but I think the opposed Briggs motors came after the Kohler singles (Like mine, a 1983) so its probably an '83+. Start a thread in the Hustler section, and post some pics and all your questions. I'm sure some members much more knowledgeable than me will be able to help you out more. In the meantime, I will try to draw up a diagram for my wiring. (Which should work for most all electirc start, points ignition engines with built in alternators and regulators.)

OH BTW, Welcome to the site!!!!

              • Hi all. I started looking for information on a Max II and ended up here. I bought for hunting last fall. I managed to get through the season and now have been looking at making some repairs. I believe the bearings are worn and need replacement. Not really what I wanted to tackle but after reading stuff here, I think I should be able to get it done.

                  • Drew is right, Buffalo Bearing is great to deal with and many people from the site, including myself use them for 6 wheeler bearings. You can reach them at 1 800-669-8019 or (716) 874-1720.

Welcome to the site deadeye! Sounds like you need to call the buffalo bearing guys up and tear into it. Its not bad at all so dont worry about it. If you mechanical enough to changed a tire on a car, you can do this. They are pretty basic machines. Good luck with it!

                          • welcome badassbanshee,

a max is a great machine to have. Especially with them being made in bufallo ny rather than china or japan. If you have questions there are a lot of people here that can help.

I did find your checklist which look's like it would be real helpful if i could find a 6x6 close enough to go look at. I did get to ride in a 2010 model on a bear hunt ,very sweet.also rode in a vintage 5 wheel Amphibious atv. scarey. still looking. bgriep
